Saturday……

It started out like any other day…and it ended up like any other day as well. And in between the beginning and the end – well that was just like any other day, too. Well then, I guess this entry is done, isn’t it?

oh wait. There was a little quirk. When Daddy dearest came over today for our regular Saturday walk, he brought me a present. A present that only my father would bother with. Last year for his birthday I gave him one of those cards that speaks when you open it. It was Mr. Spock saying something along the lines of " It’s complete and total annihilation, Jim." Well, he took thr card apart and mounted the various bits on a piece of wood which he had painted gold……..and now I have my own personal Spock speaking box.  Really.  He took the time to do all that.  Jealous, aren’t you?  Oh yeah.

By the way….that’s the second present ths week.  A couple of days ago he brought me a spice rack of sorts.  He made a beautiful double layered spice rack out of scrap wood painted gold, jelly jars with the lids painted gold and some felt.  Yeppers.  That’s to replace the single layered silver spice rack he made me a year or so ago.  The jelly jars are big enough to put a couple of years worth of spices in each jar….

Guess I’ll use them and treasure them just like I do the table lamp he made me from a triangle shaped vase, the light fixture from a ceiling fan, aquarium gravel, wood and his colonel’s wings from the police department.  No, I’m not kidding.  Really – could I make up something that……….er…..unique??

I use the lamp to shed light on the medallion from my mother’s 1957 VW bug which he mounted on a plaque and the railroad spike which we pulled from the tracks outside my grandmother’s home in Pennsylvania when I was very young.  He also painted that gold.  It’s "the golden spike".
But with all these gifts he gave me……..there’s one he kept for himself.  He has one of those hands which you shut in a door or a car trunk to make it look as if someone is trapped and trying to escape.  He mounted it on a pedestal and attached a bird on the hand……Yes – the proverbial bird in the hand.  And he kept it for himself.   Am I falling out of favor?

And there he is with my son and daughter…..the harmless doting grandpa ….  in his NRA shirt.  Good grief, I love my nut case of a father!

Hey Sammy Jo, long time since we crossed paths. Boy your daughter looks all grown up! Now I know where you got your quirky hard headedness from. Be thankful that your dad gets happiness out of making you spice holders that can hold a lifetime’s supply of spice. It is what is keeping him going. As for the NRA shirt, I resigned my NRA membership back when they wouldn’t back the banof cop killer bullets. Course I am the only Texan not in the NRA…

What beautiful kids you have, and your dad looks great too. He certainly is creative, and you gotta love him for it.
