They’re BACK!

School days…school days….dear old golden rule days…..

Today kicked off the school year for the students.  Apparently MANY of the little darlings opted out of the short week since ALL of my classes had only half – or less – of the students who were supposed to be there.  I don’t blame them…but it sure makes my life more difficult.  I have to play catch-up next week for those on an extended vacation.

On a happy note – 2 brothers that I had as students for 2 years came back to visit me over this past week.  These were two of my favorites – and I am so tickled that they still come back to visit.  I can’t wait to see what they ‘grow into’.  Their little sister is starting at my school this year…and I was gravely entrusted with her care and asked to inform the older brother IMMEDIATELY if any boys get too close to her.  She’s not allowed to have any boyfriends yet.  Older brothers are such a trip!  Of course I assusred little sis that I would NOT rat her out.  At least, not as long as she wasn’t doing the bump and grind in the halls!

I had my students fill out a Culinary Time Capsule questionnaire today.  It will go into their folders and be forgotten about – until the end of the semester when they will fill it out again and compare the answers.  HOPEFULLY it will show them how they’ve learned, changed, grown.

It was a very simple batch of questions – and I just have to share some of their answers with you… (spellings and mis-spellings have been kept intact for your enjoyment.  No names are disclosed to protect the guilty innocent.)

1.  MY FAVORITE FOOD IS: seafood, rice & beans w/ pork chops, california rolls, pizza, chinese food, eggs, noodles, t-bone steak, ceviche, mac an cheese, black eyed peas, Lasanaig, anything that tastes good, fyes, tacos, chips, spagetti and meatballs, McDonald’s & ribs,

2.  HOW MANY OUNCES ARE IN A CUP?  16, 12, 2-1/2, 6, 4, 20, and – hey somebody got it right – 8!

3.  WHAT DOES THE WORD YIELD MEAN IN A RECIPE? a powder to make dough rise, wait for a few seconds, to put cooking oil in meats, serving the amount (very close!), don’t use a lot, serving size, butter, how much a person eats out of one food, like a incredint, how much you add to it, wrong, stop, slowly pour, stay away, slow down and be careful.

4.  HOW MANY JOBS CAN YOU THINK OF IN THE CULINARY FIELD?  LIST AS MANY AS YOU CAN.  McDonalds, cheif, cook, stoves, fast food, restaurants, work, school, chef, stores, assistant cheif, waiter, frying food, bring food to table, seater, burger king, checkers, sonny’s

5.  DO YOU WATCH THE FOOD CHANNEL?  IF SO, WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CELEBRITY CHEF?  Emrell, Emerald Lugasi, the two fat ladys, emeril, rabes, that chef on Hell’s Kitchen, chef ramsey.  (Poor Emeril – he really needs a name like TOM that no one can mess up)

6.  LIST ANY DISHES/RECIPES THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO COOK: rice, cereal, eggs, soup, pancakes, ribes, hot dogs, popcorn, corn dog, bacon, chicken, cake, pizza, sausages, ice cream, toast, hamburgers, stake, apple crisp, smothies, casadea, deviled eggs, eggs with rice, waffles, spagety, spaghetthios, noodles, mash potatoes with gravy, french fries, fried chicken, cookies, too many to list, and the ever popular leader of the pack – mac n cheese.

7.  HOW DOES A MICROWAVE OVEN COOK FOOD?  uses heat waves, radiation, it warms up the food, by using its conventional fan, You first put the food then put the time to cook the food and then push start, with the heat of the light, with microwaves, by pressing the button (duh!!)

8.  WHAT ANIMAL DOES BEEF COME FROM? cows, deer
WHAT ANIMAL DOES PORK COME FROM? pigs (YAY – one that everybody got right!!!)
WHAT ANIMALS ARE CONSIDERED POULTRY?  chicken, turkey, buffalo, fish, horse, cow, pig, ketchup, seafood, lobster, crab, shrimp, BBQ.

Oh yes, gentle cooks one and all, it’s going to be a VERY good year!

Wow, they started pretty early in Florida. We don’t start school until August 22nd. I can’t wait. I love school, I just don’t like the drama with students that goes with it. I’m assuming you teach home economics or cooking. Maybe a different name, but same idea? Hope your year with students in horror free!

hehehe, looks like you’re off to a good start. 😉

Heh, this is cute. I sure hope the students who picked Ramsey as their favourite aren’t taking after him. Man, that guy has a potty mouth on him.

RYN: Oh, my dear Ms Wolf, there are many ways to off a Sim and some of them are most gruesome. You can do it quick or you can do it slow. You can put them in a room and take away the doors so they can’t get out again. They’ll scream and cry for days before they die and if that bothers you, well, that’s what the mute button is for. You can tell them to jump in a pool, then take away the ladder. They’ll just swim around and around until they’re too tired to go any further and then they’ll drown. You can electrocute them. You can set them on fire and if you’re feeling merciful, which I gather from your note that you’re not, you can use a cheat to quickly age them to a point where the Grim Reaper shows up with an hourglass and tells them that it’s time to go. Yes, you could be the Merriest Sim Widow ever and if you’re so inclined, you can even keep the memories of you many husbands alive, by building your own personal graveyard behind your house and erecting their tombstones there. Their ghosts will often wander through. Of course, if that’s not your cup of tea, then just delete the little jar of ashes left behind when they die and poof, out of sight, out of mind. 🙂

bet the results will be HUGELY different at the end of the year!

Thats too cute

August 3, 2006

Oh lord. I can’t stop laughing!!! What would these kids do if microwaves hadn’t been invented????????

August 3, 2006

Looks like you have your work cut out for you. Why in the world does your school start so early?

August 3, 2006

Some great answers there, hun. You’re certainly gonna be working hard LOL Hugz

Aw, this was funny in a cute way. I’m with the kid who likes Gordon Ramsey. Anyone who creates a celebrity cookbook amnesty is a genius, in my opinion.

I never realized there were so many kinds of poultry. No wonder Americans say “tuna FISH”, it’s to differentiate it from “tuna bird”, apparently. With a smile…

August 4, 2006

Of course buffalo are poultry because of their buffalo wings! And I hear fye was also a favorite food during Shakespeare’s day — so many people seemed to order it when they were riled up. I love the last definition of “yield” — saw recipes imprinted with traffic symbols.

August 4, 2006

ROTFLMAO!!! I take it you’re a home economics teacher?

August 4, 2006

This is my favorite part of the year when you do this list. I love that. Thanks for sharing. Lael

August 4, 2006

*grin* I suspect a few of these things won’t change over the year! (Like the spelling of Emeril?) I’m still pondering on how to cook icecream. (I take it that student doesn’t do bombe alaska?) And I’d planned to have poultry for lunch today; the list above widens my choices considerably.

RYN: If you’re serious about picking it up and your computer is up to it, go for the base game for the PC, The Sims2. The older version, simply called The Sims is still available and fun, but I just love the newer version with all those techy updates. 3D rocks. 🙂

August 4, 2006

seems like summer just started! the answers are a hoot.. the poultry ones.. lol

August 5, 2006

I was going to comment on buffalo wings. It will be fun to compare all the answers too.

August 5, 2006

You know, Tyson closed down their plant here last year. Now I know why.

August 17, 2006

Poultry cows!! And NO ONE SAID ALTON BROWN???? Pff… those kids might like Anthony Bourdain, maybe. (He’s grown on me.. what can I tell you? ;-))

August 18, 2006

The looks on their faces by the end of the year should be amusing. They never fail to amuse me, that’s for sure!

October 3, 2006

Poultry…buffalo? No wonder you love them so.
