Placeholder…

A teacher at my school is retiring.  Tonight we had a feast in his honor.  He has taught for 40 years – 35 of them at my school.  He taught with BOTH my mother and  my father.  I don’t think there are any other teachers who did that.  My parents never taught in the same school.  (I will leave out the comments about how explosive THAT could have been…)

Lots of people were invited.  Current faculty and staff, past faculty and staff, past students, family, etc.  My father attended since this man was one of his close teacher friends.  There were several other people there who were close to my father when he was Daddy Wolf, Techer Extraordinaire.

I saw my father in a new light.  Maybe I’m a little slow.  After all, it took me 48 years to see this side of him!  Still….I was amazed and touched.  There were two men in particular who he was close to for years and years.  Apparently they were the Terrible Trio at school.  Pranksters, friends, support for each other and a thorn in the side of whoever was on their hit list.  All three of them were there….and they were drawn to each other like magnets!  They hugged, sat together, hung out together, ate together – just like best buddies.

I’ve never seen my dad have a "best buddy".  It was strange… and touching.  Daddy dearest is human.  And in a GOOD way.  Years lifted away from his face.  He was animated and enjoying himself.  I stood back and watched with amazement.

OK – The man makes me crazy.  (For example, I am going to NC to see my son graduate from college this weekend.  I am driving.  Daddy, dearest is freaking out.  Not only do *I* have to call him every night….but he made sister, dearest promise to call him every night to tell him how I am as well.  Not how SHE is – how I am.  ARGH!)  But I saw a side of him that other people see tonight. And I was pleased.  I was tickled.  I was delighted.  I don’t have the words to express it entirely adequately…. wow.

See you guys in 4 days…after my son has graduated with a degree in MATH (where the heck did THAT come from?  MATH????) from UNC.  It’ll be a crazy whirlwind trip…but I bet I’ll have a story or two to tell.  And just maybe….Young Stud will see something in ME that he has never seen before – and be glad.

i’m not making a cake after that warning. 🙂 and yes, i drove all the way to Pensacola on i ten, partially repaved and got the part. They were paving westbound so i went the back roads, which took a long time, but i was moving not sitting still in traffic with road ragers so it was worth every small bridge and farm truck. 🙂

May 18, 2006

hope your trip is fabulous, that you avoid the road repavers, and have a blast! wow, dad’s are human too? 🙂 who’da thunk that?

RYN: re. the drugs…how do you know they can be wonderful? how so?
