PB & J
I know I write a lot about my students in here – but lately that’s all my life has been. At the risk of boing over the top with this, I thought I’d share some of the “essays” I had written about our old favorite – Peanutbutter and Jelly.
My 6th graders are allowed to make PB&J sandwiches – only AFTER they write me an essay about how to make one. Please remember that I work with an enormous population of kids who’s first language is NOT English. Having set the stage….read on.
My mom taught me to make an PBJ sandwich. When she teacht me I was 4 years old. Next paragraph I will tell you. My first time making and PBJ sandwich it wa ruined. It was and disaster my first time the bread was riped. My mom was laughing. First you slap the peanut butter on the bread. Next step you wach the jelly on the bread and put it together. Last you eat the sucker.
On July 14, 1993 King Philp was in his kitchen looking form somethin to eat he cound not find anything so he decide to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich. This is how he made it. First he got wheat bread he sloped on some peanut butter on one slice and the other some cherry jelly then he got out a plate and knife. Then he put the two slices together and cut it into a half. Then he had some potato chips and milk and watched a movie.
I learned how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich when I was about 6-7. I was really hungry and I went to my moms room and I got her up and told her that I was hungry. So she got up and said what can we make thats good and easy and fast so we can go back to sleep. She said ohn peanut butter sandwich. I said I don’t know how to make it. She said well come on I’ll teach you. So we went to the kitchen and she took out the bread butter nife peanutt butter and the jelly. She toasted my bread melted the peanut a little so it can be easyer to put on the bread but not to much. Then I got the bread and the butter nife and stuck the nife in the peanut butter and took some out spreaded it on the bread then I slapped them together then I put the stuff away and ate my sandwich. And thats how I make them.
I think peanut butter & jellys nice. Because is for breakfast or lunch. And when I rate a peanut butter and jelly I said this is the good peanut butter jelly that I have. Then I did one for me then I got two bread, a peanut butter, jelly & I was so happy because the peanut butter jelly was the best breakfast I had. Me and my mom sale some peanut butter and jelly. One day Ms. Harmon teach us to do a peanut butter and jelly. It was the best peanut butter jelly she did she got two bread, peanut butter jelly. I wish that I can make the beast peanut jelly sanwich. I think the peanut butter and jelly sanwhich is good because I got jelly, peanut batter together. I wish I do the best breakfast in the world. I like my peanut butter and jelly sanwhich. I will prly eat 20 peanut butter and jelly in one day. People likes peanut butter and jelly. The peanut butter and jelly is the best thing in the world.
Having written all that down and re-read it…..I am not sure whether to laugh or cry. They are so amazingly creative sometimes – and so very needy at the same time. My life was not like this when I was age 11. I felt safe, loved and fed. With many of these kids – 1 out of 3 of those feelings would be enough.
woot, first note? heh. now i’ll go back and read 🙂

wow, never knew there was so much to say about P&J sandwiches! i microwave the peanut butter for a few seconds so it is softer and won’t rip the bread. also, another way is to mix the peanut butter and jelly in a separate bowl, thus insuring a smooth mixture of the filling, with just the right combination of each ingredient for my own tastes. makes it good for the little ones that way~

Yeah, this makes me misty too. Such longing for contentment in such a simple guise. What a great prompt! Do you think these things up yourself? Note to self: add “cherry jelly” to grocery list. :o)

I dunno…..I think they show enthusiasm for life. Especially the last one, he rates his PB&J as the “best he’s ever had.” Reminds me of my younger son when he was about 4, and we were in a restaurant. He got a hot dog and said, “They have the best hot dogs here.” Like he’d been eating hot dogs for 50 years, and this one was the BEST! These, like my little hot dog critic, made me smile.

I can just see them noses two inches from the paper thinking onto the page about slapping on the p.butter and slapping the bread together. Funny how some things cross all borders. If I could take it like you can take it I’d sure like being a teacher of 6th grade loving to see how they think. I really like how you share your life this way.

I too wanted to laugh and cry when I read these. The kids are precious, funny and oh so lacking in some ways. I bet when they’re old and someone asks who their best teacher was, it will be you they’ll remember. I will never get bored with your school stories. Keep um coming.

This has me yearning for a peanut butter and strawberry jam on whole wheat sanwich. Huckelberry is the bestest tastin berry but it’s not sold in stores. Blueberries look like them but they’re not even related. Remember “Huckelberry Finn”?

*smile* Dare I admit that I’ve never, ever eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? So not only was this an interesting entry to read, it was an educational / cultural one. Now, would you be interested in learning about vegemite on toast?! *grin*

I did enjoy the thought of King Philip eating a pbj sandwich, crisps while drinking milk and watching a movie. that’s a lot of imagination. My favourite one though is the kid who was hungry in the night. That mom took the time to toast the bread and warm the pb, what a wonderful memory. I also like the asspirations of the one who wants to be the best. That kid could go far 🙂
