Not the Wedding Stories Yet…

You know it was an “interesting” few days to say the least when I went on up to see my baby boy get married.  But I haven’t had time to do the recounting justice yet.  Maybe this weekend.

In the meantime, this is a honey of a handout that appeared in my mailbox at school.  Is it really from Mr. Gates?  No clue.  But it ISpriceless and more true than true.  It ought to be required learning… but then people tend not to understand this sort of thing until they live it….too bad it takes so long!

Bill Gates’ speech to Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia, CA.

To anyone with kids of any age, here’s some advice.  Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school.  He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1:  Life is not fair – get used to it!

Rule 2:  The world won’t care about your self-esteem.  The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3:  You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school.  You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4:  If you think your teacher is tough, wailt til you get a boss.

Rule 5:  Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity.  Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping – they called it opportunity.

Rule 6:  If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7:  Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now.  They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were.  So before you save the rainforest from the parasites of your parents’ generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8:  Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT.  In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer.  This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9:  Life is not divided into semesters.  You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF.  Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life.  In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds.  Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

No matter what you think about the Mr. Gates’ company or product – that is so bare fact TRUTH that I wish all our kids would understand.

Be back soon with more “chatty” writing and to catch up all round…..Peace out!

Great rules, no matter who said them

April 23, 2004

I think I’ll have to take some of these advices myself. Thank you for sharing! =)

Life and the “somethings like it” that kids run into upon graduating can come as nasty shocks. This list is a warning bell, a call to preparation of sorts, isn’t it? Reality bites, as they say… take care.

This is a Gem for passing on. Will add it to my Memorabilia files for use in a future post– like the next one. Thanks, Sunshine Wolf, you are a dam good teacher!

I’m still getting summers off! 🙂 I love nerds. I tend to date them. Mostly because I think I am one. 🙂

Btw, this is from Gates’ book, “Busines @ the Speed of Thought”. My diary has it at post 3/3/2002.

oh this was so very good and so very true, I think they need to use it at every graduation! LOL 🙂

*hugs* glad to see you alive and seemingly well. i agree with rule 6 wholeheartedly… everything is my fault. heh. i think i knew all of those, and i am a teenager. if bill gates came to our school, i’m sure he’d be just as boring as any other assembly.

Welcome back 🙂

April 23, 2004

Glad to hear the wedding went well & to see you back. These words of truth should be required in every school class room. I’ll have to pass them on to my neice & nephews. Can’t wait to hear details about the wedding. *warmest hugs*

RYN: You know, you’re a fine one to complain about people being quiet for too long. Ahem. By the way, did I ever send you a pic of me and R? With a grin…

I have read this before and thought the same thing. Every High School senior ought to read and memorize this! I wish I had.

I think these rules apply well to a business person such as Mr. Gates…but as an artisit/musician, they’re completely off the wall. There’s no point in telling them to kids if they aren’t going to understand them…but oh well.

April 26, 2004

the last one may also include ending up one!!! Great points *grin* looking forward to wedding news!!
