Spring Break

This is Chickie’s Spring Break week from school. So…today we packed up a blanket, a chair, a cooler, a BIG umbrella, a radio, sunscreen….and a friend….and headed off to the beach. Yes, yes. I know. You ALL thought that I’d be sitting on the side of the road waiting for Dubya’s motorcade to pass by on his way to MacDill AFB today so I could wave and blow kisses at him….but I decided to forgo that little life highlight in favor of the beach. We set up camp under the umbrella and the girls wandered off while I sat back with a book in my hand – which I never read. There were too many people to watch! Instead of a narrative – this will be rather more loosely worded – drawing pictures…if not pictures, then sketches. FallingDog…there will be some reference to rippling muscles!

Pelicans skimming the swells, their wingtips lightly kissing each tiny wave.

Tourists overdosing on sun, well on their way to blisters and sun stroke. Lobster red painful skin. Oh how it hurts me to even look at that.

Piles of spring break rubbish strewn inconsiderately and incoherently across the sand… beer cans, water bottles, slurpee cups, beer bottles. Any doubt that teens can’t decide whether they are adults or children – slurpees or beer?

Coal black cormorants floating submerged with just their snake-like necks sticking out of the water, looking like a flock of periscopes for mini submarines…and then sitting on wooden pilings, wings stretched out to dry in the sun.

Power walking beach grannies, skin tougher than leather, deeper brown than walnuts, striding purposefully along the shoreline in neon wading shoes.

Kids building sand castles, using buckets twice as bit as they are…double fisted shovelers and daring little tykes sitting not on, but IN the bucket…falling asleep face down in their castles…

God love European men in their skin tight speedos – a welcome change from our American “boys” in their cut-off jeans, baggy shorts and ¾ length pedal-pushers.

Noon time – changing of the guard. Families go home and the “real” spring breakers start to emerge – teens, teens everywhere. Coconut smelling lotion, radios,

Boys, young men, adolescent, pre-pubescent boys… falling all over each other and themselves on skim boards – chests puffed out – in case any of the girls on the shore line are watching…pushing bicycles along the shore line, carrying a couch down the beach, strutting their long and lanky rippling muscled bodies which glistened with sweat and sea water…throwing footballs, chasing Frisbees, furtively watching the girls…who are watching them…who are watching…..

Girls, young women, adolescent, ladies…doing back handsprings across the sand, playing the guitar, giggling, strutting, wearing teenie bikinis, skin, skin and more skin…the land of spandex…and silicon. Long legs and day-glow orange pants. Surreptitiously eyeing the boys who are eyeing them …who are….

70-ish couple…in matching black and white bathing suits…holding hands and walking. How lovely.

Coast Guard…every 30 minutes, checking the coast line without fail. We wave.

Wind, wind, wind…clear blue skies smudged with purply gray clouds…sun peeking through.

Sea gulls soaring high, riding the wind…then lighting to squabble with each other over crumbs and empty zip-lock bags…and to scream at beach goers, demanding more.

Digging toes down deep in the sand, past the sun warmed soft sand on top to the cold wet sand below. Breathing deep of the sea air…looking around…closing eyes…absorbing the rhythm……and never wanting to leave – ever.

When I lived in Hollwywood, (there’s one in Florida, too!) I remember Spring Break as being total wall to wall people in the afternoons through the evenings…couldn’t even THINK about driving anywhere. I wonder if DIrty Ernie’s is still in Dania? They had the best conch fritters and roast pork sandwiches! I can hardly wait to come visit!

Thanks for the trip to the beach SW….we’ve been a bit short on UV’s here in the great NW. Plenty of water, though. Here’s wishing you a ‘beach state of mind’ most all the time.-Jeff

Hee Hee. I live at the beach. I do not drive to it. I walk there. In fact, I took a little stroll with the cutie boy this evening after dinner. It just does not get better than this. 🙂

Oh I love the beach. You brought back memories of me being one of the young girls on Jax beach. However, you did bring back memories of the neighbour from There’s Something About Mary with the leather skinned grannys!!

Why would boys carry a couch on the beach?

March 27, 2003

I’m saving my money so I can come visit next February. Be warned. With a grin…

Strolling after posting. With a smile…

awwww

March 29, 2003

Strolling again. I’m staying on my writing roll so far. With a smile…

That’s enough to make this desert/mountains girl want to go to the beach! ~:) ArtImp, nsi

Sigh… I can hear the surf… 😀

Ahh, the beach. Your beach sounds a bit balmier and has more of a “scene” than beaches around here, but I love all kinds. Northern California with big, cold waves, surfers, and seals; hawaiian tropical beaches of ease, boogie boarding w/o a wetsuit; languid packed beaches for people watching & warm resting. “…absorbing the warm rhythmn.” yes. Can’t wait unitl our vacation to Hawaii(soon)<

ryn: hehe slurpees or beer… i say slurpees.. i dont want to grow up…i like being a toys-r-us “kid”. lol, im such a dork!! i do like slurpees though. playing the guitar… ::Smiles::: i love my guitar. Love. the kind that lasts. God bless that 70ish couple. Priceless. =)
