The Goddess

Payton sat there, leaning on the wall and staring at the empty space where the Twins had just been standing. She was numb and she was weary. She didn’t like it here. She didn’t like the company that was keeping her. She wanted to go crawl into her cozy nest of a bed, snuggle in and never come out again. She closed her eyes and began carelessly bumping her head against the wall in annoyance. It wasn’t hard enough to hurt herself. She had all sorts of thoughts rolling around in her mind in a jumble and she didn’t know what to do, but she had to do something…so she zoned out and rhythmically thumped her head against the wall.

Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump….

It wasn’t helping.

Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump….

Payton thought she felt another presence nearby. “Oh no,” she thought. “No way. I’m not opening my eyes. I couldn’t stand to see one more horrible creature.”

Despite her thoughts to the contrary, Payton found herself with her eyes wide open staring in amazement at the most stunning entity she had ever seen. There before her, bathed in a soft silvery glow, stood a woman. No, not a woman, but rather a priestess. No. Priestess was too inadequate a word for this sublime being. She was a goddess. Payton slowly closed her eyes, held them tightly shut for a few seconds and opened them again. The woman was still there and smiling gently at Payton.

“She’s not A goddess”, Payton thought. “She’s THE goddess!” Payton began to tremble.

The woman began to speak to Payton with a voice as light as a spring breeze and as substantial as a mountain.

“Why do I find you, one of my most cherished, sitting in this place literally banging your head against the wall?” The voice held a slight tinge of amusement.

Payton gawked. The woman was amazing. She was moderately tall and not overbearing. Her hair curled around her head and down her back like gentle waves in a moonlit stream. Her eyes were a clear, bottomless and sparkling hazel/green fount. Grace emanated from within, even though she stood stone still and unmoving. Payton even thought she smelled a hint of lavender.

Seeing Payton’s confusion and perplexity, the woman laughed. It was a magnificent sound of clear bells, birdsong and rushing waters.

“What?” said Payton dully. “You must have me mixed up with someone else. I don’t know you. How could I be cherished by you? This is nuts. I don’t know you at all!”

The woman smiled as she reached out her hand to help Payton stand.

“That’s right, dear one. You don’t know me. But I know you very well. You are struggling and in great need of me. I am here to help you to know me, for I am your true best friend.”

Payton stood on shaky legs. An uneasy thought was beginning to form in the back of her mind. Quickly she pushed it away.

“Who are you?”

The woman took both of Payton’s hands into her and looked deeply into Payton’s eyes.

“You have already figured that out, if you would just listen to yourself. Payton, I am you.”
