evil
Man oh man, my thoughts are all over the place right now. All that really is coming clearly to me is a theory I read about in my sociology textbook – that tragedies and deviance may be good in the sense that they unify those touched by it and reaffirm their common moral values.
But that? That’s not nearly enough. Any sane person could tell you that violence and homicide – particularly in such magnitude, and against innocents, is horrible and wrong. We didn’t need this tragedy to remind us of that. This makes me feel sick to my stomach.
What’s to blame? I keep asking people this and they always say the same cliches. Guns are to blame. God is to blame. Health care is to blame. Fuck that shit for one minute. Yes guns cause death, Yes God needs to clarify what He’s doing and yes America needs better health care. All valid points. What’s to blame for this tragedy? A fucked up son of a bitch with a gun. But What made Him do such evil?
I think it’s the culture itself that is to blame. Oh geez, there I said it.
Our western culture sexualizes and fetishizes violence. The media tells young men that they must always be hyper-masculine, in control, powerful – violent. You think it’s hard to be a woman? Imagine being a sensitive guy in a world that tells you the only way to be a "real man" is to be dominant. And yes, women commit crimes too – but far, far less than men. And that has nothing to do with the fact that they are women. It’s because women are not taught to be dominant and violent – no – women are taught to be sensitive and talk about their emotions. the male and female brains are pretty much the same. What’s different is how men and women are treated.
Can anyone really argue with the fact that men are encouraged to be violent by the media? One might say "Oh well men are also encouraged to open doors for women – SEE – that’s not violent!" Congratulations, here’s your cookie, now please use your brain and think. Women don’t need men to open doors for them. In fact such behaviors only encourage ideas of male dominance.
Let me clarify something here. Men are NOT inherently violent. Men do however as a whole commit far, far more crimes than women. Once again this is NOT because they are born violent. it’s because men are TAUGHT to be violent. (http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/who_commits_crime.htm is one of the many sites supporting this theory)
A woman could commit such atrocious crimes. That is entirely possible. But it’s just so frigging uncommon so you have to really ask yourself why that is.
The world is not going to shit biscuits. There will always be evil in this world. Evil is what defines Goodness. But this? THIS? the slaughter of children is more than Evil. That’s the devil at his finest. But here’s the catch – the Devil has always been there. If you think of it we’re doing a lot better than say 100 years ago. The world isn’t exactly getting worse… but this still is horrible. This is still disgusting and so incredibly sad.
okay so here’s my idea on how to prevent such things from ever happening again. A) Pray. B) LOVE each other deeply C) remind those you care about that they are allowed to talk about their emotions D) remind those you care about (particularly males) that they do not have to hide behind some violent persona and finally E) if you know someone going through an emotional trauma remember it is your duty as a human being to help them.
We are obligated as human beings to love one another. I don’t care what religion you affiliate yourself with (if any), I don’t care if you’re male or female, sane or insane, we are all humans. And we are all capable of love. So let’s love… simple, or it should be.
I don’t know. I’m sure there’s a million things you could blame, video games, barbie dolls, too much sugar… but what it really comes down to is figuring out how we as a culture and a society can work together to change things.
What’s to blame for this tragedy? A fucked up son of a bitch with a gun. But what made him so fucked up? It wasn’t God I’ll tell you that.
