Volcanic Tremors

So this morning started out pretty rough. The painter guy whose has been doing work here painted the laundryoom last night, so this morning I opened the door to air out the fumes and they set off the gas alarm for some reason. So I was forced to give up my silent treatment and call Ish to come fix it.

Meanwhile we have 4 sets of house keepers, and one of them is actually an Indian married couple who work together. Well, for a while now the husband comes in to work whenever he feels like it, and I have a real problem with it. The old manager had a real problem with it. If all other house keepers have to be here by 9am, then so does he. Well a while ago I was complaining to Ish about it and how unfair it was to the other workers that we allow him to come in so late every day, and Ish told me I could just give them fewer rooms until he started showing up on time. So I decided for every 5 minutes he is late, he will lose a room. Well yesterday he was 45 minutes late, and out of the 12 rooms he could have had today, I only gave him three. Well Ashok (which is his name) comes in when Ish arrives and he sees his paper. Of course he starts complaining. (Like he always does. This jerk doesn’t do anything but stand there and watch his wife do all the work. He gives rude stares and he’s extremely impolite.) So he starts whining to Ish about his three rooms.

So Ish starts in on me. And then the fight begins.

"Why did you only give him three rooms Hanna?"

"Because you told me to take rooms away if he continues to be late. So I did. I took 1 room away for every five minutes late."

So Ish translates to Ashok since he doesn’t speak English.

"Hanna you have to tell him to be on time."

"Are you kidding me? I TELL HIM EVERY DAY. I’ve had your wife tell him. Lee told him, I tell him, who the hell else is supposed to tell him?"

"You cannot take rooms away from him."

"Ahh, again not a man of his word. So your’re telling me he can break the rules when he wants and just come in when he wants but everyone else is required to follow the rules?"

"Yes.

"WRONG. It isn’t fair that he gets special treatment and no one else does."

"Well, he’s late because he’s praying."

"Well then Ish, you better make damn sure some one is here tomorrow morning at 7am because I may be a little late because I am blessing my damn breakfast."

At this point I walk out of the office and he follows behind me yelling. So we battle it out some more. I tell him Ashok either comes in at 9 like everyone else. That if it takes him so long to pray, to wake up earlier. I’m not bashing his religion, he has a job, a responsibility. Come to work and freakin’ pray, but be here BY 9."

So then he kept arguing with me and I just left the office. I was so close to telling the jerk what I thought of him, but then it would require me walking out on my job and unemployment doesn’t pay people who quit voluntarily. I want to hear the words "You’re Fired" before I walk out the door unless I have another job lined up.

I was so angry I was shaking. I can’t even type the whole fight because I’d be here all day, but it went on for ever and ever. All the employee’s slithered out of the room, scared of what was about to happen. I think they really thought I’d explode. And i came so close.

So when Ish would try to get my attention, or tell me to do something, I’d just ignore me. I just am to the point of not caring or giving a shit at all. I am angry now, incredibly angry that he thinks he can be an asshole and get away with it. I pray for the day I can walk out of here and a trail of employees follow me. And they will, because I built up a loyalty base, not him. He’s going to be so screwed, and I am not gunna have to lose sleep over this place anymore.

I have come to hate my job, hate who I have become. I will not let this job change who I am. This place will suffer when I am gone. Just watch.

We take leave when the present pain is greater than the fear around the corner.

i totally agree, i think it’ll fail miserably once you’re gone but no one will realize that till it actually happens. he knows he can treat you however he wants because you’ve always let him get away with it and you always come back day after day….. im proud that you’re finally standing up for yourself! but still you cant run a business like that.. allow some people excuses when others have

to do exactly as they are told….. and i cant believe he could even get away with it. why dont the other housekeepers say something? you know you can always report the place to the better business bureau, or whatever.. probably get it shut down. obviously things there are crooked and the main is a nut job.. –
