this is the moment that you know…

the girl bit her lip all day long.  she saw him in the halls, but she turned the other way.  he looked at her, and she dropped her head.  isn’t this what he said he wanted?  she does insist on a hug on the way to math class, but it seems like a small tribute to the day before.  could she have been stupid enough to fall for another trap?  she hates letting herself fall for boys, and if this is a mistake, she doesnt know what she’ll do.  they are so different, and she knows that.  she knows that he has lots of friends, she knows that he has a lot of fun, more ‘fun’ than she will probably ever have, and she feels like he is so much smarter than she. 

as she looked at these pieces, she felt the doubt creep up through her stomach and into her throat.  she felt sick again, for the second time that day.  they drove his friends home after tutoring the kids.  and as soon as they were gone, she closed her eyes and hoped that he hadn’t changed his mind.  this would be the moment. 

but instead of dreadful words, she felt a hand fit gently into hers.  she opened her eyes and he was looking at her, and his eyes pierced her all the way inside the way they did for the first time all those months ago.  and she smiled at him, and traced his palm with her fingertips.  and they drove for what seemed like forever, past her house and the park where she grew up and past the new construction and the elementary school and the 7-11.  he put the car in park and touched her face softly. he pulled her in so that his mouth touched the bottom left corner of her lips, just above her jaw.  she breathed and she knew he felt in on his face, and the kisses continued and built until the question of innocence arose:  and neither one had an answer because neither one had lost theirs completely. and it was in that moment that she knew this was all happening for the right reasons.
