In the last year or two, I managed to kick my habit of going to Half-Price Books and buying up armloads of paperbacks every month.
In its place, I started going to the public library again. Yay for using my tax dollars!
Since I’ve started going to the library for my reading material, I’ve discovered a fantastic new ability: the ability to put down a book that sucks! When I was paying for a book, I would fight through to the bitter and unsatisfying end, no matter how dreadful it was.
On the one hand, I feel liberated! On the other hand… ugh. I’ve realized how awful a lot of sci-fi/fantasy writing really *is*. I tried out a Melanie Rawn book last month, because I’d seen a lot of her work at the bookstore, and I stumbled across the first volume of a series (hard to do at the library). 100 pages in, there was no main character, no exciting plot, a drab and poorly described fantasy world, and the author was ham-fistedly nudging two characters toward a horrible love-at-first-sight arranged-marriage story. Pass!
So on my last trip, I decided to branch out and get things from outside my usual niche.
I’ve already given up on Agatha Christie, who I’d never read until now. This book (Mystery of the Blue Train) was just awful. I ditched it 75 pages in — about a quarter of the way through the novel. Note that the plot synopsis begins with Hercule Poirot (the ‘main character’ detective) boarding a train.
When I quit the book, this had not yet taken place. Yes, the main character had not yet made an appearance in the book. The crime had yet to take place. Oh, it was a dreadful snooze, bouncing between three or four groups of high-society English, and their little feuds. Utter tripe.
I’ve started Burroughs’ Naked Lunch next, and I’m not so sure about it, either.
I’ve been heading to the library lately too. I just read the Stepford Wives, which I thought was really pretty good. Of course, I also really love Agatha Christie. Maybe you should have started with Thirteen at Dinner 😉

Don’t give up on Agatha Christie, there is some really good Poirot. Try a different one 🙂 The Orient Express is also about a train, but it’s an awesome book! 🙂

We don’t have any Half Price Books around here. 🙁 I just took out a book from the library for the first time in a couple of years – Under The Dome by Stephen King. It’s on my 101 in 1001 list to take out 5 books from the library instead of buying them new. I have a hard time giving up on books, but sometimes – geez. There are some crappy books out there.

I think Burroughs was terribly overrated. Junkie was pretty good – but it’s a fairly straightforward piece about, well, being hooked on smack. The experimental stuff (Naked Lunch, Interzone etc) just bores me. YMMV

it’s aaalways something! why can’t we just do what we got to do and then be done! why must there be all this other junk all the time.. btw if you find a book that’s worth a read let me know. i’d love to get into something but it is hard. i picked up a couple at the goodwill the other day and a few pages in i am bored and distracted..

let me know if you hit on some good sci-fi novels that don’t spend 100 pages describing how their lame fantasy world exists. I have had such rotten luck, I’ve given up lately.

I used to haunt my town’s library in my teens. I read like a maniac, and would then lurk around in hopes some cute boy would pick up one of my more preferred books and I could start up a conversation…. never happened, but I could’ve been doing far worse things with my time. lol

I love, love, love libraries.
