Pop goes the Pyrex

Thursday night Jen and I made some cinnamon rolls. I put the rolls in a pie dish to back. When they came out of the oven, we left the pie dish on the stove top. Man those rolls were delicious. I also made hot cocoa from scratch.

We went to bed and Friday was our usual work day. After work, I met Jen at her work and we went out for dinner. We were going to go to see a movie, but Jen wasn’t feeling too hot. So we went home.  Jen went to bed for a nap and I just putzed around, playing a video game. I got bored and went to blockbuster.

I came home and we settled down to watch Fred Claus. It was a pretty good movie. Since Tim Allen’s Santa Clause trilogy, I really didn’t care for a lot of newer Christmas comedies. This one though, was pretty good. At one point I had gotten up to put water on to heat up for some tea. I was unusually cold so I needed something to drink. Jen and I resumed the movie. All of the sudden we hear a loud POP and a lot of shattering CRASHES! I was thinking How in the world would the glass tea pot shatter like that? Did I put cold water in the pot and got some on the outside of it that interacted with the heat from the stove?

Jen and I rushed into the kitchen to see blue shards of glass all over the small gally kitchen. It was the remains of the Pyrex pie dish we had left on the stove. Even by our entryway, hot shards landed on the carpet, singeing the fiber strands and sticking fast. We also found pieces out in the dining room iin the carpet. It took the two of us an hour to pick up all the pieces off the counter tops, stove top, sweeping the kitchen floor three times, cutting shards out of the carpet. We had to clear the counter tops off to make sure we found every little piece. Even this morning, I swept the kitchen again, vacuumed the carpet and the kitchen and still found some pieces with my feet. . . no cuts though. However, I did cut my hand last night and got some blood on the carpet. I went to get a band aid and Jen opend a can od Sprite Zero and cleaned up the carpet.

So I learned, again, to be more vigilant about 1) don’t leave anything on the stove and 2) make sure to turn on the correct burner. Remember a couple of months ago i broke my pizza stone by turning on the wrong burner?

random noter: sorry to hear about this! I bet that’s no fun to clean up! Just in case you haven’t heard about this cleaner, it might become your best friend (especially with a little one on the way!) It’s non-toxic and works WONDERS. Red wine stains on white carpet 1 yr old can come out! It’s called Kids ‘n Pets. You can find it at walmart (aka, anywhere). It’s about $5 for a bottle, but it’s well

worth it! Just squirt the area (or soak) with the stuff and then scrub it until it foams (with a brush). That’s all. I also use it on clothing and furniture, or I add it into the wash to help get oils out. It’s a real stain life-saver, and it’s guaranteed to get out nearly everything (including that blood on the carpet!). 🙂

oh man. that sucks. never a dull moment right?

Wow! You know you will be finding glass for months down the road…and in the strangest places too. We’ve had a few issues with glass breaking, but not quite as cool as a pyrex dish exploding 🙂

good to hear you weren’t near the kitchen when it happened! our pizza stone split when it was in the oven with a pizza on it! any idea why that would have happened?

Been there and more than once too. First time cracked a pizza stone too. The second time we had covers over the electric burners and had the paint on that smoking and really made the house smell.
