There was a carnival going on and we were going to go to it. I knew there was something happening because when Amy and I rolled into town we couldn’t navigate very well and we couldn’t find the Jessica’s house because nearly the entire middle of the small town was blocked off. The only reason we figured it out is because a police officer pulled us over because he was curious what a vehicle with our plates was doing wandering around town. He gave us good directions though. I was so excited…
“I’m glad you’re back.” She said suddenly into the silence as we were walking down the darkened street.
“…Me too.”
“What took you so long?”
I didn’t reply. She didn’t ask again. We walked the rest of the way quietly holding hands. Kayti was there too but she didn’t say much. I wondered why; while the silence spoke eons between Jessica and me, it seemed to be something forced from her. Maybe she realized that the silence was special for us. Maybe she felt out of place. I considered asking her but thought better of it. We walked the rest of the way in silence.
