I Still Dream~~~
With a child-like heart
I still dream…
Riding the rainbows
of my imagination,
I travel o’er fields
mountains and restless sea
without fear or hesitation.
No compass guides me.
No map charts my course,
for only my heart knows the way
to its true destination.
And there…
on a grassy hill
overlooking the sea
is the cottage of my dreams
in stark reality.
Built lovingly fifty years ago,
it has hardwood floors
and hand-hewn doors,
three bedrooms,
and a little kitchen
with a wood stove.
There are ocean views
on three sides
and a private beach in a cove.
A horse grazes
in the pasture below,
and in back, a small garden
where vegetables grow.
There are bushes to pick
fresh berries for pies,
and a porch on which to sit
and watch the sun rise.
Of dreams and reality…
I am a practical person most of the time, but I am also a romantic at heart and must admit that I often daydream. Prior to a recent move, I spent a lot of time researching the real estate market on the Internet. (Modern technology makes house hunting so much easier than it was thirty years ago 🙂 Ironically, my husband and I bought a house that was “for sale by owner” and not even listed on the MLS sites. However, I loved viewing the photos of potential houses so much that every now and then I log on just-for-the-fun-of-it and search for homes in places that I’d love to visit. My idea of the perfect property has always been a cozy little cottage by the ocean. On a recent Internet search of properties in Newfoundland, I came across the “cottage of my dreams.” There it was — everything I’ve ever dreamed of! Now vacant, the cottage was built by a local carpenter who obviously selected the property because of its fantastic ocean views and rural appeal. I’ve observed the property for several weeks now. My family circumstances require that we live in a suburban environment, so moving to such a location is therefore out of the question for us ~ But as mentioned, I still dream ~ Life has been hectic lately (happily so with family birthdays, anniversaries and wonderful visits from out-of-town family members), but a few nights ago, I stole a few minutes for myself and logged onto the real estate site. I discovered that my dream property had been sold. A smile lit up my face. The cottage is meant to house life abundantly. While acknowledging its history, its walls are meant to be filled with songs and laughter, tears and sorrows, and the promise of a new and exciting future. Its fields are meant to feel the nakedness of bare feet, the rolling tumble of lovers embraces, the drops of sweat from a gardener’s brow, and the potential of a plentiful harvest. Rocking chairs will sway back and forth on the wooden planks of the porch while the new owners gaze out over the sea and inwardly thank the carpenter, who many years ago envisioned a dream and turned his dream into reality.
A dream is a song sung from the heart~
I love your poem and story. It’s heartwarming to know that vacant dream cottage by the sea you found but couldn’t use is vibrant with people again. My closets were full of good clothing and other items collected over ~50 years that I never use. I gave most of it away yesterday to a charitable organization so needy people could use it. It brought a nice feeling. Have a nice day, adrift.

You always see your glass as half-full, my friend. Instead of bemoaning your position, you found something beautiful in it. You are a beautiful light, S!

A life without dreams seems so boring and the people who have such lives, so dull. Yours seem wonderful and so do you. I hope the new owners are worthy of your dream.
