Something Beautiful

Jen a while back told me to write about something beautiful. I didn’t forget but I couldn’t really think of anything to write about. I thought about the usual , butterflies, rainbows, But I know that is not what she was looking for. So I continually thought about it… She probably thought that I wouldn’t do it. But you know I think I found what is really beautiful.

I was looking and thinking watching and observing. I saw nothing much. But then in my past I have witnessed many wonderful beautiful things. I now that the human spirit is what is really beautiful. I remembered of how I watched a homeless elderly feed pigions. I watched her as people walked by in discuss. They didn’t like her being so close to the Washington DC Am Trek entrence. I watched and then walked up to her and asked her what she was doing. All she had was a baby carriage carrying her belongings and a few pieces of bread. She handed me some and told me to just hold it and they would come to me. And the birds did. I will never forget how I felt to be amongst a hundred birds. It was amazing. I went in to buy bread and when I came back she was gone. I happened to get a photo of her before I walked up to her. But when you think of it … She was a homeless lady that people considered a problem …. they walked on the otherside of the sidewalk and casted downward glances. But she had nothing to give yet she gave everything she had. She taught me a lifes lesson through watching and talking to her.

In another one of my travels I met a young homeless man in Santa Cruz Ca. I sat and talked with him a while. He had his sign and his cup. He was only 24 years old and was in a car accident that left him with a serious back problem in which he couldn’t afford to get fixed. He lost his parents in the car accident and so was then left to fend for himself as I listened to his story another homeless man walked by. He stopped talking and called the guy over asking what he had gotten in his cup. He had $3.50 so the young man counted his cup and had $5.25 . The young man then gave him the difference and made thier cups equal so that the older man could get something decent to eat. I asked him if he knew the other guy and he said he never met him. Why is it that the homeless can so willingly give when they have nothing yet we find it hard to even donate our time?

Now take a look at a big picture everyone witnessed. Sept 11th. While it was an awful event it brought our country closer together. When had civillians help remove debre that worked night and day. All across the country people were standing in lines for hours wanting to donate blood. People all over the world offered support. Or even look at the Katrina Hurricane. People opened thier homes to strangers. Whole families offered and donated thier second homes. People gave what money they had and once again kindness was filled the states. You can take any event that has been devistating, or any minor indiviuals story and find they all have something in common. The Human spirit. The beauty is something everyone possess. It is story behind each face we see, the beauty of both the pain and the love. If devistation and misfortune never entered our lives we could never have compassion, know support, or really even feel graditude. There are people all across this world that dedicate thier lives to the simple occupation of love, weather they volunteer in a nursing home, Help runaways on a street, or become a victums advocate. Jobs that often have no monatary value. But nurtures loves and cares for the human spirit.
