Atlas Shrugged Pt2
I was never able to get passed the first chapter of Atlas Shrugged, in the words of Rothbard: "I have always had a bit of contempt for the novel form, and have thought of the novel, at best, as a useful sugar-coated pill to carry on agit-prop work amongst the masses who can’t take ideas straight.".
Although being such a prominent book in liberty circles, it’s hard to not understand some of the interesting (and some not so interesting) details.
I found her framework – in the book – allowed people to analyze and criticize social, governmental and personal structures with a good logical method (looters, producers and moochers) and understanding the utilitarian nature of currency (Francisco’s Money Speech, combating the often misquoted "The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil").
Before I saw the second part, I was hoping for a movie that could be used as a tool, to bring people into a more rational systematizing of our current zeitgeist. To bring people into a more integrated understanding of human motivation, incentive structure and the evils of aggression – Things that my pragmatic side can not help but appreciate Rand bringing these tools to many people.
To contrast, I found the movie attempted to do too much (as one critic said "what’s meant to be heroic too often comes across as constipated self-righteousness"), with a script that was hard to follow, motivations that were inchoate at best and maintaining a lack of any real buildup throughout. I am sad to say that the movie is only useful to someone who had already read the book or already subscribed to the ideals.
Particularly the dull feeling that it had been co-opted seemed more evident when Hannity came on screen for a short cameo, (I think I became physically ill) or the Obama/OWS allusions to the protestors will only serve to alienate and separate – Things that we REALLY need less of.
