Blanket

You break my heart with your doe-brown eyes, right before sunrise, full of sighs and goodbyes, the curve of your cheek so meek pressed against my arm, you put me under your charm and into harm’s way, I’ll say, I’ll pray for another day without your face falling from grace to another place without a trace of my taste, my chaste little soul, I want you whole and I can’t let you go, till you hurt me so, that I will say no, so that you won’t know what you’ve missed, with a flick of your wrist, a clenched little fist, there goes another wall, another fall, another call in the morning when you’ll be mourning from another knife in your heart, pulling you apart from the seams, the dreams that you had, to be so glad I wasn’t mad and you weren’t sad, and we’ll be wondering how you put that sundering into my blundering ways, my infatuated daze, your emotional haze that took me down to the wrong part of town to drown in your frowns and tears, full of fears that will reappear years later, when you’ll remember why you were a hater who shot me, fought me, caught me and got me to lay down my fists, crossed off of your many lists, just so you could sleep better at night, while I sat under the lamplight, dreading another fight at the sight of your sad little smile, and I won’t be there for you to tangle your fingers in my hair, to tell you how it was unfair that you were left there, I won’t be around when you’ve hit the ground without a sound, when you’ve crawled to the bathroom floor and closed the door, but don’t turn on the water while your heartbeat grows softer, don’t hover under the cover of other lovers who leave you empty and spent, bent beyond your lungs can take, before you break, just call me, don’t fall for me, it’ll be over soon, under the moon, with my nails on your skin, to wash away your sin.
