Forecast for Summer

Summer is amazing in this area of the country. It’s only just coming into Spring, but already I can feel how amazing the Summer is going to be.

There was a street carnival on Friday night. It’s a small town, but everyone from all the surrounding little towns turned up en masse. In the early evening there were joyful things like bouncy castles and clowns and toffee apples for the children, but as the night went on they were replaced with bands performing on the cathedral steps, beer tents and fire-poi demonstrations – which I participated in!

Fire poi: OK, I’m not sure if they exist overseas, since non-fire poi are a New Zealand thing… But after a quick Google check, it seems that they’ve gone global. If you don’t know what they are, go here.

It looks excessively impressive, but is pretty easy since I learned to poi-dance (with traditional, non-flamy poi) as a child. I love it when people gasp at the roaring twirling fire.

Ree and Mare were poi dancing alongside me, the weather was mild, excellent ska music played, and a bunch of my other friends sat nearby providing illegal beers (we were outside the designated drinking area). It was so lovely and perfect, and I could just feel the progression of similarly perfect evenings there are going to be over the summer. I can’t wait.

Well, I’ll be damned. It does look impressive! Things like this make me want to say Yes to my friend’s proposition to go to New Zealand for a month..
