Today I opted not to go into work and am spending this Saturday afternoon, chilling, sitting against the backdrop of this quaint coffee shop. Yeah I decided to drag my ass out of bed to get some studying done; I’m fairly certain that if I stayed home I’d have wanted to sleep the entire day away.
I don’t have the words to describe this fatigue. Only that my mind is in this constant state of tired; same tired feeling you get when you’re forcing yourself to stay up all night, except this is perpetual regardless of how many hours of sleep I keep trying to cram in.
I didn’t mean for this to be another dreary post. I really wanted to share that I’ve finally gotten a Nook App. 🙂 Now I can buy books for cheaper from the B&N website and read them on the app. I absolutely love it for these reasons–
- IT COMES WITH A DICTIONARY FEATURE. This is great. I always come across words I don’t know in my reading, but instead of looking them up I tend to get a general impression of the word without being able to articulate its meaning, and I continue with the flow of the story. The result is that although I can use the words correctly in my writing, I can’t explicitly tell a person what it means exactly. Now with this app I can just highlight the word and have the Nook app provide a dictionary definition on the spot.
- I went on a binge and bought five books (I know; terrible. I’m not strong enough to resist the temptation that is a seemingly good book). What’s cool is that as long as I have my laptop/tablet with me, I can have these five books accessible at all times. No more tote bags! No more having to take the time to decide which book(s) to bring as I go elsewhere and which to leave behind!
- ebooks are actually cheaper than paper copies!
- This app allows me to customize the book settings; this means that I can change the font style, font size, margins, background and text colors, columns, etc. IT’S GREAT I LOVE IT. The white tends to hurt my eyes. I love sepia for its reminiscence of the books I poured over as a child, but I’m finding that the black background with soft white font is easiest on my eyes.
- No more having to go to the store! I feel like I spend a good chunk of my life just traveling from place to place; I’m all for cutting travel time out; I liken it to getting rid of ads or commercials while watching a show or something.
- The app itself was easy enough to navigate through on my own.
Those are, so far, some of the reasons why I really like this Nook app.
As for the books I bought, I can share their titles here, anonymously. I always feel like the book collection a person has is rather telling of a person.
Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy
The Art of Thinking Clearly
The Order of Time (the author who wrote this is one of my favorites)
The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World
The Art of War (This is my second version of the book; I have no idea where my hardcopy disappeared to. I suppose this might be one more reason why an ebook might be better than a hardcopy)
My transition to ebooks is still fairly recent. I’ve always stubbornly held onto the paper copies, because nothing could replace the feel, smell, and texture of a book in my hands. I’m still working through the pile of paper books I need to finish, which is why I find the slew of ebooks I just bought kind of shameful. Like, I should have finished my paper books first. But there was a deal going on with the ebooks and I couldn’t resist (one of my ebooks was just $1.99! Another one was free).
But here I am with a tote bag again (and will be for as long as I need to finish my paper books), with these paper book titles to complete–
Philosophy of Physics: Space and Time
Mind Map Book
Reality is not what it seems
Into the Magic Shop
^I’m over halfway through all these titles; just need to finish the job.
So I’m technically carrying 9 books w me. >.<
