Day 57 Holocaust Memorial, auf weider zane Berlin
57 my last day in Berlin. Started out leisurely with a bit of breakfast at the hostel, then fiddled around with paperwork, then headed out to see what I could find out there in the big city. I took another street downtown, heading towards the Brandenberg Gate. And quite by accident I found the Holocaust Memorial and information centre. I’ve read a bit online and the whole memorial is very controversial. There are pillars (stelae) of varying sizes covering a large undulating area. I really liked what was there. I then went underground to the information centre. Security checks were necessary. It was very moving and sad to read about the holocaust and hear audio and watch videos, and I hope we never forget what happened. There is a sentence on the wall…. ‘This all did happen, and therefore this might happen again’. I learnt a lot about the extent of the murder, just about every country in mainland Europe was subject to the horrors of Jews being sent into ghettos and then by train to the concentration camps.
Very sobering.
I’d earlier had one of the best lunches in this city, at a Thai restaurant…pork green curry and rice……yummmm.
Wandered back to the hostel, had the dorm to myself for a while, before the next lot of travellers arrived. There’s a Scot and guys from Belarus. No women tonite. In the evening, I went back out to soak up the last of this vibrant city, different street entertainers, beautiful evening weather for my last glimpses of Berlin.
Early start tomorrow for Zurich, better turn out the light and get some rest….
And there are some, now, trying to change history by saying that it didn’t happen. That is extremely sad and dangerous.

Yes, we recently did the one in Washington DC….very moving. Yet it is happening now in Syria. I find your journey magic.

I’m a little surprised to know there is a Holocaust Museum in Berlin. There are several in the US. Maybe those who are ashamed of what a modern civilization did, the horrible crimes against mankind, would like to erase it from history books, but they can never erase it from history, and it won’t be forgotten. I’ve met a couple of survivors. Both had the ID number tattoos. Both were women.

I imagine you’d feel a bit shaken after the Holocaust Memorial.
