Driving to work

I heard a sound that I rocked my soul

My first thought was that someone had shot out the back window.

A rock had dropped from an over pass
someone was trying to kill me.

I flashed to this story I heard as a kid,

These guys were driving in the U.P.
on a clear day
with no other cars on the road
and suddenly
with both of them looking out the front window
the hood exploded with blood
and the Metro came to a screeching halt

the car was covered with Fish guts and scales

The state police said that an Eagle or some bird of prey
must have lost it’s grip on dinner
from very high up

they estimated the fish was 11 lbs

dropped from high enough

that will kill a Geo.

and for a minute
I though
Maybe it was a fish
dropped on the top of the rear hatch
blowing out the window.

All these thoughts
split second

but there was no wind
and I was soing 55 on the highway

and if the window was blown out
there’d be wind

the boom was too loud to be a tire

It was like a shotgun went off in the back seat.

I turned to see Ice.

Ice

All over the ceiling
and the seat
the the back of my seat

and then I realized

It’s too cold to leave a 30 pack of Diet pepsi in the back of the car

grabbing the rest of the pack and bringing it into work so no more would explode

Harrowing

like walking across hot coals carrying a five gallon bucket of gasoline

Like taking a tamborine off the head of a sleeping bear

like moving a sleeping baby……made of bees
