Not screwed, well not completely

My new position was confirmed, I covered the paperwork remotely today. Apparently her finger slid down (or up) a line on her call sheet after she dialed and she was reading someone else’s bad news with my name attached when she left the voicemail. Of course that doesn’t fill me with confidence about her competency, but what’s done is done. She is trying to process it as a lateral move though, instead of the promotion it should be. She’s going to “consult” before she confirms the offer, but I may have to go over her head. If they do it as a lateral I’ll get screwed out of a 10% raise, so I’m more than a little concerned.

In other news, I found out from Critter this weekend that D (K’s brother) is being deployed to Afghanistan sometime early next year. As I mentioned before, his MOS is Intelligence, not Infantry, so she hasn’t completely lost it. I fed her the normal lines about him being “in the rear with the gear” and with good air conditioning to boot (because of the computers), but she’s still scared, and she has every right to be. Her “little boy” is going off to war, and we have far too many names carved on memorials to honor “little boys” who came home ‘on their shields’, or didn’t come home at all. I’m scared too, but I have to be strong for her and for the girls, it’s my job. I’m Obi-Wan to their Luke, and I have to be strong.

But I’m terrified…
