Agape Response
Responded to a friend with this…just liked the way it came out.
I never even heard of the concept of agape love until college. It would seem that I, as well as most others, never really understood that the way that our culture, our media, and pshyche define love in a narrow way. Immanuel Kant talks about the idea of a moral good, he raises the question of whether or not it is possible to do a work without the thought of outcome or reward; to perform a true act of love for the sake of it being good. I wonder sometimes if we are even capable of such a thing, I am usually skeptical that it might be in our grasp. However, the idea of this kind of action that is purely good, is being pushed by something so much larger than oursleves…just the thougt of that type of love (as C.S. Lewis might say) gives me tingles sometimes. Alone, we are incapapble of this kind of love, but then again we are not alone. A love that is “unlimited, unconditional,” and above all “uncalculating” is both impossible as well as illogical without the idea of a Good and Loving God. Other loves intimidate something so intense, so powerful. No wonder romance, charity, or even brotherly loves let us down…incabable of being “uncalculating.” A love without an agenda…without Him we can’t keep that train on track…it’s agape; love to the fullest.

love is just plain impossible anyway. it’s neither philosophical, nor probable. it’s human instinct to find a mate and that’s all. some people are only lucky enough to find a mate they can put up with. //

this outlook puts two basic human instincts at odds with one another: selfishness and love. can both of them exist at the same time?

love that is agape. i only hope we are capable of such splendor. xx

this made me think a lot, could there really be love with an agenda… i like to think the answer is yes, but my heart leads me to believe otherwise

Odd, I only discovered about ‘agape’ love earlier this month, myself. Interesting to read another’s thoughts on it. RYN: Not sure if there’s an entry about my novel on here. If you wanted a look, you can check it out at http://allpoetry.com/poets/Ravenlord under the ‘Letting Go’ collection.

…ah Kant…I do enjoy some of his theories..although I do not agree with many of them…hehe…I am not one to rule things into the impossible category…which includes aspects of love…being quote unquote pure…or not…your response to your friend…sounds like conversations er rather some may say arguments…that I talk about in bars…since for some reason when I drink…I sometimes…
