The Philosophy of Bodily Emissions
I don’t know how it is done. People resign themselves to the facts of life – age, death, wrinkles, loss of loved ones, declining mental faculties, etc… Yet, life itself irks me. Why must we be unattracted to natural things? Obviously, there are biological reasons to be attracted to someone in their prime. They are more likely to produce healthy children and to be able to be around to protect and care for them. But why, for example, are we unattracted to basic requirements of the body? Farting, burping, pissing…why are these things repulsive? The smells, of course, are unpleasant, but what is it in our brains that marks those smells as such? I know these questions seem redundant and the answers seem obvious, but are they really? As humans, we tend to ignore the existence of these things when possible. It just doesn’t really make any sense. I can understand how ignorance could be a turnoff for someone that values intelligence. I can see how an overzealous interest in sports might be a turnoff for someone who doesn’t enjoy them. But, natural functions are universal. So what’s the point in being repulsed by them? Don’t get me wrong, I know we adjust to the truth that our partners and other people do them, but I don’t know anyone who has confessed that the true reason they fell in love with their significant other is because he/she could burp the alphabet or could fart on command. Hrm…
