Trick Or Treat

Richie Tankersley Cusick

Page Count: 209

Genre: Young Adult Horror

Cusick’s third novel Trick Or Treat delves more into teenager interaction in a school setting, something Cusick didn’t approach until this novel. With Trick Or Treat, we get to know a larger number of main characters, but still maintain a close relationship with each.

In the first chapter we meet Martha Stevenson, our main character. She and her father are driving to their new house where they will be moving in with Mr. Stevenson’s new wife and her son, Connor. Martha is upset that her father eloped, and even more upset that he has uprooted her entire life. As they pull up to the new house, Martha is overcome by an eerie feeling. The house seems to have "haunted house" written all over it. Little does Martha know, the house has a past worse than she could have ever imagined. As weird things start happening around the house and she keeps getting creepy phone calls, Martha becomes certain of one thing: Someone (or something!) is after her. And it won’t stop until she is dead.

Once again, Cusick has created an amazing group of characters that the reader can’t help falling in love with. The interactions between Martha and her step brother, her new best friend Wynn, and Wynn’s handsome cousin, Blake, are so real that you feel like you’re there with them! Also, the haunted house concept is pulled off wonderfully. Cusick puts a unique new spin on a somewhat traditional idea which keeps it from feeling overdone or cliche. The story has enough twists to keep the reader interested and guessing until the end.

While this book is categorized as Young Adult Horror, it’s definitely a good read for anyone who likes any type of thriller. Although it is no longer in print, you can find used copies for sale on amazon, ebay, or bn.com. I strongly recommend buying a copy!

Last book I read cover to cover (I’ve actually stalled in the middle of a Mark Twain book) was Johnny Got His Gun. I forget the author’s name but if you’ve ever sen the music video for the band Metallica’s song “One.” It’s clips from the movie based on the book. It’s about a man who was torn to bits by a mortar during war. No limbs, face gone, all in his head. A very disturbing yet moving tale
