Think Twice: pt. 2
There was a light on in Bretts bedroom, and Trevor and Joel crept up to the corners and slowly stood up so they could see inside. Trevor blanched and took off at a dead run for the always unlocked back door. Joel tried to catch him and stop him, but he couldnt, and he just followed instead. Trevor tore down the hall, slamming through the door of Bretts room. You assholes! He screamed at the naked and shocked Alicia and Brett.
Trevor launched himself at Brett, fists flying, Alicia barely made if off the bed before Trevor was on Brett. Totally unprepared, all Brett could do was protect his head. Alicia grabbed futilely at the sheets, trying to cover herself. Joel was already trying to pull Trevor off, and Alicia tried to help, but Trevor shoved her away.
Finally Joel got him off and held one arm. Trevor stood there shaking and breathing hard, not believing his eyes. Alicia came over and tried to touch his arm.
Violently, he shoved her away, Stay the hell away from me, Bitch! He snapped as she fell against the bed. Then he whirled around and took off out of the house. A few seconds later the spray of gravel could be heard as he took off in Mikes truck.
You Are an Asshole. Joel said, pointing an accusing finger at Brett, and you? he pointed to Alicia, You are a Slut! He spat disgustedly. Then he walked out. He got everyone else into Ryans truck and they left.
By the time Joel had dropped everyone off at their homes, he knew Trevor would be back at home too. He parked the truck in Ryans driveway and got into his own, then headed out to the small acreage. He let himself in and walked slowly up the stairs towards the living room. Trevor was out on the deck with a bottle of Jack Daniels, dropping something over the railing. Joel walked up beside him and leaned on the railing, realizing that the things Trevor was dropping were all pictures of Alicia.
When he ran out of pictures, Trevor finished off the bottle of JD in a couple of gulps and then watched it fall on top of the pile of shattered glass and pictures. Im going Calgary. He said resolutely, as the tears dried on his face.
Huh? Joel wasnt sure if hed heard right.
I’m moving to Calgary. Trevor said, I quit my job two weeks ago, today was my last day. Got another one lined up down there already. Got a house too. I was gonna tell her tomorrow. Was gonna take her out to eat, all nice n shit, and ask her if she wanted to come with me.
Im moving to Calgary. Joel said, still totally confused.
Yep, so am I, just two blocks away from you. Trevor said, turning to lean against the railing backwards. He crossed his arms over his chest and stared at the sky. Ill be gone by noon. Everything here reminds me of her so Im leaving it all. Not taking hardly anything. It even smells like her around here.
Trevor, have you actually thought about this? Or are you just drunk? Joel asked, trying to understand what Trevor was telling him.
Yep. I have a house and all Joel, and I wont see their face again. Trevor smiled wryly and sucked in a deep breath of night air. Theres too much bad luck in this town, Joel, too many assholes like Brett. Im getting out.
I cant believe your serious man. This is too weird, shouldnt you be pissed off or depressed or something? Joel prodded.
I had a bad feeling, thats why I didnt say anything about it to anyone. I knew something was gonna happen and that I had to wait for it. I guess that was it. I guess she wasnt the one, thats all there is too it. I didnt see the signs, and I even told her I was the one in the wrong because I was jealous. Now I dont even feel anything, Im just numb. Im almost happy, its like she was a deadweight I was carrying around with me. I thought it was real, but it wasnt and I cant do anything about it now, so Im not gonna even try. Trevor explained.
It happens to the best of us I guess. Joel said softly. He straightened up and stretched. Call me in the morning before you go, Ill bring the rest of my stuff down too. He punched Trevors shoulder lightly and started to go, Oh and get some sleep man. He added over his shoulder. Trevor nodded and went back to staring at the sky.
Alicia had called Trevor a million times. Finally after 3 days of indecision, and 4 days after the incident, she drove out to the house and walked up to the door. She stood there ringing the doorbell and knocking for a good 10 minutes. She walked around the house and up onto the deck to try that door too, still no answer. As she walked off the deck, a flicker of light caught the corner of her eye. Sun glinting off broken glass. She turned towards it, taking in the broken bottles, and picture frames. Tears slipped down her cheeks as she realized what the pictures were of. She bent and started to pick them up. Finally seeing all the love that had been in his eyes. The pictures fell out of her hands; more tears fell as she got a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. She stood up abruptly and stumbled back towards her car.
Once more the sun glinted off something on the ground and she bent to pick it up. The tears turned into sobs as she recognized the one thing shed given him in the whole year theyd been together. The silver chain and eagle pendant. The sobs racked her body as she clutched the necklace, crouching in a ragged weeping ball. All she could think of was how much freer he was now, and how much power she had really had over him. Eventually she drove home, numb from the pain of reality, the first reality shed ever actually felt.
THE END.
