Moosey had her babies!!

I’m a Gramma!! Moose had her babies this morning, born July 10,2011, easy to remember because it’s my nephew’s Bday too! She had 5 very pretty babies, all a good size and all appear to be healthy, they are feeding and moving around.  Three of them look to be a medium grey colour with markings and 2 are lighter, almost like a creamy greyish colour with markings. I think they are going to be very very cute kittens and will go fast once they are at least 8 weeks old. I won’t let them go earlier then that because Moose was given to us at 6 weeks and she still sucks on me, hopefully having her own babies will break her of that habit lol

I have this closet just outside my bedroom with two boxes of old clothing and a sleeping bag zipped up laying over the boxes, and when I woke up this morning, I heard Copper whining and barking a little, I get up and saw Nik laying on the sleeping bag, he jumped down and copper jumped up and was sniffing all over, so I pulled him off and I unzipped the bag and sure enough there was moose laying in the corner giving birth, one kitten was already born, so I opened the bag up a little more so she can breath, have no idea how she was getting any air with the bag closed up and Nik laying on it.  I made sure she was ok and I went downstairs and put up a baby gate I have to keep copper in my room at night to keep him and Nik out.

I kept going up and checking and each time I did, another one was born, and she was doing a great job cleaning them off and eating the afterbirth (eww) except the last baby, it was still attached, I tried to get her to notice it was still attached but she wasn’t doing anything about it, so I left her again and an hour later I went up and the kitten was still attached. After they were all born, I pulled the sleeping bag off the boxes and onto the floor so she could have a more sturdy place to move around in, but she wasn’t doing anything about the last baby. So I got a box and lined it with newspaper and an old towel and put her and her babies in the box except the last one, then I put moose back in the sleeping bag with the last baby and she saw the afterbirth and ate it ( again eww) and she bit off the cord to the kitten too, so then I put the last baby and her in the box and threw out the sleeping bag. I left her again but this time they were all in the box and in my room and closed the light. I went back up again about 30 min later with some food and water for Moose, I put it in the box with her and she ate and drank, and I talked softly to her and petted her til she started purring, I then left her again and when I went up to shower, she was sleeping and resting comfortably and she had cleaned off the kittens a little more.

I’ve noticed that giving birth smells really bad, it seems to be a little better since I threw out the sleeping bag and I guess once she has everything cleaned the smell will go away. I think I’m gonna sleep in J’s room tonight since she is visiting friends in Toronto this weekend. I don’t want to move her and the babies just yet, and once they are all cleaned right off and the smell is gone, I’ll move them into the dining room and block it off from Nik and Copper.

I’m so proud of my Moosey for doing a really good job, the poor momma is so tired, Nik did a good job as Daddy by laying on the sleeping bag protecting her from Copper this morning, and he kept an eye on her everytime I was up there, but he didn’t go upto her, and I won’t let him yet.

I figured she was gonna have them soon because last night she was restless and very affectionate with me last night, kept jumping up on me and snuggling with me and purring.  Feels weird being a Gramma tho haha
