Music Memory

This entry was mainly for me so I can remember should I lose track of this stuff someday somehow, it’s just a big run down of music and then youtube links to songs I enjoy, unless you’re bored I wouldn’t bother read this. Although the music links might interest you, possibly not though.

I’ve been sorting through music this last few days, because I consume so much I’m in this perpetual cycle of finding, reviewing, enjoying and then finally naming them correctly. I have a complicated system.

All music I download goes into a folder called ‘Reviewable’ which has three categories in it, ‘Priority’ ‘Next’ ‘Last’ which is the order of importance. From there 3 folders then exist, 2010, 2010 Fail, Genre Casting and Rebirth. Any song off an album I like I copy into Genre Casting to listen to it, it’s basically my revolving current music folder, once I’m tired of a song in Genre Casting I put it into an Mp3z folder, currently I’m on Mp3z26, I keep them to 1.4gbs in size because when I started making them I used 700mb CD’s to burn them, I liked to keep it to 2 CD’s. As for the album itself if there weren’t at least two passable songs on the album it will go into 2010 Fail, that changes every year by the way so next year it will be 2011 Fail, if the album was average to good it’ll go into 2010 and if the album was exceptional I put it into Rebirth, very few albums make it into Rebirth it is the strictest and I’ve really got to love at least 4 songs off the album. I’ve only got about 200 albums in Rebirth.

Every album I download I listen to at least twice before picking songs off of it or deciding where to put it, usually I listen to the album 4 or so times if it’s average and if I love the album then I don’t bother counting since I’ll probably listen to it dozens of times. If I hate the album I’ll still listen to it twice, it’s important I think because the first time I listen to a song I don’t notice any of the details, but once I’m even basically familiar with a song I can start picking things out, the layered melodies, the lyrics, supporting instruments, the drums, lots of details which help to make a song enjoyable.

My personal favourite album is Plans by Death Cab For Cutie, if you’ve ever known someone who died that album will make a lot of sense to you, regardless of that though the melodies are catchy and very pretty and the lyrics are very well considered, I’m not really a Death Cab fan but that album was quite the revelation for me. Other than that the other pick of picks would be

RYN: I like being at work when it’s raining, but I hate walking in it to & from car/station. Haha aw yeah those poor tiny kids with their huge bags. All they need to take is their lunchbox, why do they need such a huge bag! Ah, Kensington, many a night spent there either at the Roundhouse, NIDA or just wandering. I like the tree lined streets.

Yes, I’ve made about five really good friends from the train. It made the trips go quickly! Ahhh wow somebody else who understands Dashboard! I love Standard Lines. Actually, I love every song I’ve ever heard him sing, also in his old bands. 🙂
