Red Hat
I have just stepped into a new dimension of geekdom.
I am writing this entry from within the K Desktop Enviroment on Red Hat Linux 7.2… if you have no idea what that means, then just imagine using a Windows or Mac OS that you have never even seen or imagined before. But, now that you are thinking about it, imagine it being cooler than whatever you are using now.
Of course, thats really hype – – I’ve only been using it for about 20 minutes, and v7.2 does run doggedly slow, it seems… but still!
It is still a window-based system, so processes run when the icons are clicked, and there are menus at the top of all the windows. But many of the menus are foreign to me, and I still haven’t found where to change the system volume levels!! *argh, laugh*
I have installed this on my office computer. My “rationale” is that it is part of my continuing education. And, I suppose no matter what – it is. However, my main interest in installing it here and now is because I may need this knowledge in order to stage a coup against I.T. and the webserver teams.
The Linux operating system (KDE is just a graphical user interface) is purportedly the most stable and most useful platform from which to run web services (any network/shared computing services). Part of this learning curve for myself also includes the Apache web server software, PHP web scripting language, and mySQL database access language.
Well, enough of this for now. My brain is beginning to overload with “new” and it is already 8:15 – a long day for me. I will hunt down AIM software, then either shutdown, or start up GNOME (a different GUI) just to compare.
Welcome, my friend, to the experience that never ends. *nix,NIX is the first step into the world of Linus Torvalds and out of the world of Bill Gates. You will now spend hours reading books and documentation, only because you want to. *nix,NIX will be your favorite obsession.
