Random memory
I was just looking over a calendar of ideas of things to do with children over the summer. On one of the days, it suggests “Take a walk and point out the North Star. Learn how it helped explorers and travelers.”
I remembered lying on my back in the middle of the sidewalk at night, shining a flashlight into the sky, trying to “light up” a new star, or light up a meteorite. I was never successful; I always assumed it was because I moved my flashlight around too much, or because I didn’t leave it turned on long enough.
I tried several times, and I have tried it again, just for fun, as recently as 2 years ago. It still didn’t work….
What I thought was really cute, and even impressive, was how at 5 or 6 years old, I understood that “light” took time to travel, that the universe was made up of HUGE distances, and that deflection angles are HUGELY multiplied over a distance.
I didn’t learn the science of that stuff until years later, but I had an intuitive grasp on some concepts which some adults still wrestle with.
I think I was a cool little kid.
This also explains why I got beat up alot.
I hated science and history in school… No interest for me… but weird how you reflect back…. and look at me now. I own a fancy telescope that moves to where I tell it and I absolutely love the skies… I really would rather do nothing else then walk outside under the star lit sky. If you have any cool idea wit kids let me know. I have 6 y/o’s. I found a cool

Isn’t it amazing that the sheep from our school days, in the majority of instances, didn’t make the differences that the rest of us have with our lives and perceptions? There is justice, even where there was once no mercy.
