Jaspers TV survey

Jasper’s TV Survey

1. When you watch TV, do you purposefully watch and pay attention to it without dividing your attention for other people or tasks?

Hardly ever to be honest. I have a serious multi-tasking problem.

2. When you don’t have a show you want to watch that is on at the moment, do you turn the TV off?

No. Never to be honest. Unless I am going to bed or leaving the house. I like having the noise.

3. Do you feel uncomfortable if you are home but there is no TV going?

100% yes.

4. Do you essentially have a TV going in the home all of your waking time?

I would say mostly yes.

5. When someone visits for a reason other than specifically to watch a TV show, do you feel proper entertaining/socializing requires (1) turning or keeping the TV on so it is running during the visit; (2) turning the TV off?

Weird! I would be SO uncomfortable with it off. I’d feel like I was lacking in my entertaining skills. HA! I am a total weirdo.

6. When you visit someone for a non-TV reason, and the host has a TV going during the visit, do you feel the host is being rude to you or hospitable to you, or you don’t care one way or the other?

I find it EXTREMELY uncomfortable if the TV is off. I feel more at home with it on in any house, and even more comfortable if the host goes about their own business also.

7. If you visit for a non-TV reason and the TV is running, do you fully participate in conversation or do you tend to watch the TV and lose track of the conversation?

Of course it is distracting, but if the conversation is important, then yes, I can follow very well.

8. What is your feeling about the TV being on a non-erotic show during sex? Does your answer differ if the sex is with a spouse or long-time partner or instead with someone relatively new?

I have had sex with the TV on, and it is very distracting. Haven’t done that very often, and probable won’t do it too often in the future either.

9. If you were entirely in charge of your own home’s arrangements, would you put a TV (1) in the living room or other space most used for socializing; (2) in a separate family or rec room that is also used for other purposes; (3) in your bedroom; (4) only in a room specially designated for TV; (5) in every room you can afford to put one in?

I have a TV in almost all rooms of my home. I would like one in the kitchen also, but I’m not there yet. All rooms except the bathroom should have one in my opinion. Ooohhh…. telly in the bath, that’d be cool!

10. Do you have a TV in your car/SUV? Do you use it to keep kids quiet during long trips? Do your kids habitually watch it during short trips?

I don’t now, but we did. We would take LONG ASS road trips in the US, and the movies on the computer were a fricking lifesaver. I-spy and singing only goes so far, and then you have to deal with the crying and whinging and the boredom and the tantrums. Brilliant idea!

11. If you have children living with you, do you essentially let them watch TV whenever they want (with or without content restrictions)? If not, what restrictions do you put on TV time?

Before I had my daughter, I said things that I now regret. She has a TV in her room, but it is not hooked up to cable. I severely restrict what she is allowed to watch. She has numerous DVD’s that she is allowed to watch, but she must get permission from us before she turns it on. She is allowed one hour of cartoons after school during the week and she is allowed two movies in her room on the weekends. We also have a movie night once a week where we bring the mattress down and we all snuggle up, kid and all. We eat popcorn and choose a movie to enjoy as a family.

12. If you have children, how much do they control the channel selection?

She doesn’t unless it is her cartoon hour.

13. Do you habitually flip channels?

ALL THE FREAKING TIME…..

14. Do you watch TV for hours at a time without caring much about what it on as long as you can flip around and find something not too dreadful?

Always. Its a sad life I live.

15. Do you watch infomercials? Not just look on for a bit before flipping past, but stay with them to their end?

Infomercials are awful. I used to get high and watch them. Never sober though. Now… that IS a waste!

16. Does someone in your

home or life put pressure on you, specifically or implied, to (1) watch less TV (or none at all); (2) watch more TV and you want to.

Nope. We are all alike. We love that damned TV.

17. If your TV habits or preferences are different from a significant other, how do you address those differences in actual use of the TV?

Sky +, TIVO, On demand. It is one of the BEST inventions of the past decade. For real.

18. If, for some reason, you’ve gone cold turkey (or nearly so) on TV watching for a significant period (meaning months, not hours), did you feel better overall, worse, or not really any different with respect to your quality of life?

I went a few months with no Sky. I still had a DVD player and TV. I spent those months watching countless movies and Family Guy. It was awful. All I wanted was to see what was on the DAMN TELLY!!!!

19. If you were teleported into the front of a TV Watchers Anonymous group, told to say your first name, and then expected to talk about your TV habits in terms of addiction, what would you say?

Hi there, I am completely addicted to TV and no, I don’t see it as a problem…. so, I’m in the wrong place. Bye.
