vehicular manslaughter

So it really is a miracle I haven’t vehicularly manslaughtered half the male hacidic jewish population in my town.

You think I’m joking? Seriously!

When you turn a corner of an unlight road and large groups of hacidic men dressed in black  walking home from temple on the side of the road happen to be there…it takes skill not to hit them. My town is 3/4 hacidic jews. That’s a lot of men in dark clothes on the side of unlight roads at night.

This has to be the sixth or seventh time I have scared myself by coming so close to hitting them that I screamed aloud in my car to myself. And yet they seemed unphased. Their God really must give them massive reserves of peace and tranquility.

Meanwhile, up until a couple weeks ago it was still light out when they were walking home. So when I wasn’t trying to not mow them all down with my car and go to jail, I was cheerfully waving hello and smiling out my window, wondering why they wouldn’t wave back and why they were being so rude.

After several weeks of this I mentioned it to my (jewish) roommate, who nearly had a heart attack. Apparently, even acknowledging me and waving back is a horrible sin and they were probably rushing home to repent. I am now  known as the town hussy in the hacidic jewish community.

Wow, for a social worker I am not very culturally competent. In my…. spare time I should probably be doing a little research so as not to murder or gravely offend half my town. Okay, so I don’t have spare time, but the least I could have done was used the time I spent writing about these escapades on OD to do a little research.
