Large-scale Massacres in Recent Chinese History

  1. Dungan Revolt (陝甘回亂, 1862-1877 AD): revolt of Hui People in Shaanxi and Gansu against the Manchu Qing Dynasty because of the Han favoring discrimination policy. Hui People killed a lot of Han People, with Hui People being ethnically cleansed by Zuo Zhongtang (左宗棠) after the war. In Gansu, the population in 1861 is 19.495 million, but that in 1880 is 4.955 million. The number of people killed is 14.54 million.
  2. Punti-Hakka Clan War (土客械鬥, 1855-1867 AD): clan wars between the Cantonese and the Hakka Peoples in Guangdong. The casualty of each group is 0.5 million, which added up to be 1 million.
  3. Yangzhou Massacre (楊州十日, 1645 AD): Manchu conquered the Chinese city of Yangzhou, and killed 0.8 million residents in the city.
  4. Nanking Massacre (南京大屠殺, 1937 AD): Japanese conquerors killed 0.3 million Chinese citizens in Nanjing.
  5. Jiading Massacre (嘉定三屠, 1645 AD): Manchu conquerors killed 0.05-0.2 million residents in the city of Jiading.
  6. Boxer Uprising (義和團事件, 1900 AD): The member of Society of of Right and Harmonious Fist killed the Chinese Christians and Western missionaries. The casualty is estimated to be 0.02 million.
  7. Port Arthur Massacre (旅順大屠殺, 1894 AD): Japanese soldiers killed 0.02 million Chinese citizens in the Chinese coastal city of Lushunkou.
