you’re the only poetry i can write
heart shudder mouth stutter
you’ve taken the oxygen from
my vowels. he tells me he wishes
he knew me before this and
i wish to say that i knew myself
before this too, knew myself before
my fingers ran along the line
of his collar-bone. i wish to
say that it is like my world only
became round when i met his lips.
that atlas acknowledged my presence
when his name lay next to mine.
i often wonder if my heart can
take much more of this,
this feeling of bursting when
before i could not handle silence.
i used to mix my name around
as if i could make other words
from my consonants and vowels and
the only one i could ever come up
with was me, but with you’re u
i can make an us and it’s
like our names were meant to be.

maybe i am becoming sappy and soft in my old age, or maybe my words have run away for the day but i do not care. we ate jelly-beans and i asked why he was running one along my skin… he said: “because then it will taste like you”
