(continued)
A shrill whistle broke the night coming from his line and he smiled “See watson the reinforcements are comming. Watson moaned “If they make it this far.” He heard the german lines open up and he grabbed for a grenade and pulled the pin “They will.” He counted and lobbed it over the tree and heard the explosion, creating a lull in the germans gun fire. He leaned over the top of the tree and let loose with his M1 Grand. He looked back and saw the shadows of the approaching line behind him. He fired again and reloaded, two more soldiers dropped in beside him. The two soldiers open fired with him “We need a runner I need a stretcher, and three medics.” The soldier on his left took off yelling for a medic. “see watson!?” He looked and saw watson nod slightly “cmon bud stay with me.” He squeezed off a few more rounds. He looked back to see medics running up. He ducked back and yelled to the medics “Shrapnel wound to the lower abdomen, I put one morphine stick in him about fifteen minuets ago.” They put him on the stretcher and took off under the cover of the tree and cover fire.
He squeezed a few more rounds off over the top of the tree and moved towards his lines making sure he wasn’t any bigger than a tree limb protruding from the log behind him. Rounds whizzed past his head making him realize how much closer to death he really was. With a final dive he flew into a foxhole landing on the man already inhabiting it.
“What the fuck?!” He found a rifle barrel in his face “Ah shit Gareth what the fuck I almost shot you!” He stood up “I know Alex but the point is, you didn’t so don’t freak out.” Alex grabbed him by his bdu shirt and he stood up shaking a bit. “We thought we lost you in that damned patrol” He shook his head “That wasn’t a patrol Alex that was a damned charge at an enemy CP” “Why didn’t you turn around when they fell back?” “Didn’t have a chance, they cut down the whole group with the exception of me and some guy from Able.”
“Sounds rough.” He sighed “Your telling me, if it weren’t for some of the fallen guys out there who knows. I had to grab ammo from one of em.”
Better you than me Gareth.” He stood up and jumped out of the foxhole “That’s what they all say Alex.” He looked around listening to the night watching the stars. He wondered what happened to Watson he made is way to the aid station. A muddied up medic approached him “What can I do for you Corporal?” “About five minuets ago a private was rushed in here with a shrapnel wound to his gut?”
The medic looked around and shrugged “Probably needed surgery so is either at the battalion OR or check with the XO see if the kid’s tag is in the pile.” He nodded “Thanks Doc, I appreciate it.” He ran to a jeep driver and tapped him on the shoulder “Can you take me to the battalion Aid station?” The jeep driver took a drag off of his cigarette “Yea for a pack of luckies” He pulled a pack from his back pocket and handed them to the ruddy looking driver “dont mind the fact that its a bit squished.” “Its alright out here a lucky is worth more than its weight in gold out here.”
“I plan on trading all that I can collect for a Luger.” He glanced at the jeep driver as he got in the passenger side “those are hard to come by, even on the front lines. The Germans take those off of their own officers.” The driver nodded “Yea, I’ve heard, but out here who wouldn’t try and find one for two whole carton’s of lucky strikes and a few chocolate bars.” He whistled “Dam your rich man, I’d be trading it for a desk job not some fucken Luger.” “My kid brother wants one, so far I have sent him a Hitler Youth knife from Normandy, a German Helmet a few patches and other knickknacks so he can have a collection.
He held on to the seat with one hand and kept his rifle ready with his other. “You know I hear we are stretched beyond belief on these front lines the dam krouts are sneaking through getting lost due to the fog some times.” He felt himself tense up “Why doesnt the general just beef up the lines?” “With what? The 501st is surrounded, all of the units in the area are concentrating on breaking that line to the north, the whole damned army is way to thin.” He sighed and nodded “that’s the sad truth isn’t it?”
