Age Old Story
He has a girlfriend. Of course he does. Why wouldn’t he? He’s attractive and talented and funny and he’s a halfway-decent guy (as far as I know at this moment). Of course he has a girlfriend! Duh!
The whole being friends with a guy that’s taken only works if you aren’t attracted to him in the least. One of my best guy friends holds that position because I’ve never, ever, thought about being with him. The moment I find a guy attractive (even if the attraction developes over a long time as friends) he goes in another category in my brain – the "careful" category. Because from then on out I’ve got to be careful. If he’s single I’ve got to be careful that I don’t throw myself at him and make myself too obvious – especially if I don’t know if he’s interested in me or not. If he’s taken then I’ve really got to be careful to not let my feelings run away with me and create a potentially bad/wrong/awkward situation. See? Careful, careful, careful.
Oh what does it matter anyway? He’ll be in a different city in the fall in a different part of the state. So even if they break up, what’s the point? There’s no way, NO way it’ll work!
Maybe I’ll just sigh when I see him and leave it at that.
