Northeastern Snowpocalypse
After I wrote this entry to the lovely snowstorm that was sitting on top of New York on Thursday night, I got a call from The Boy at about 10:30pm frantic about his flight cancellation. We both made an extremely quick decision for him to fly into Albany instead of Rochester and that I would pick him up and drive him to Rochester. In the Snow. At midnight.
WHAT the FUCK was I THINKING?
I got to the airport at about 11:40pm and his flight was delayed til 12:15am. Finally, he landed, and got to my car at about 12:40am. We talked for a few minutes about our options. 1) Go to his parents house, wait a few hours, hope it gets better, and leave for Rochester at around 4am. 2) Drive as far as we can, stop for the night, get up early and finish the trip to Rochester.
All of this was so that he could get to Rochester in time for his grad school interviews. This was really the only time he’d get to talk with professors one-on-one for any substantial time and really get a feel for the school and the research they’re doing.
We decided to forge ahead and stop when I couldn’t safely drive anymore. Now, according to reports from people the next day…it wouldn’t have mattered if we had stayed or gone, by the time we got to the middle of the state shit was going to suck regardless of whether or not it was at 6am or 3am. We made it as far as Utica and had to stop. Mind you, that should have only taken and hour and a half…we didn’t get there til amount 4am. My car got stuck trying to get it into the hotel parking lot…The Boy and A Nice Trucker Man had to help dig me out. For the record: apparently a crutch is better for digging a Jetta out of the snow than an actual shovel.
We finally got into the room at 4:30am, slept until 7:30am, and then continued on. It still took us way longer than it should have to get from Utica to Rochester. I can usually do it in 2 hours. When we drove out on Friday morning it we left at 8:30am and got to Rochester at 11:30am. Both of us were exhausted. Added to my misery was the serious pain I was feeling in my knee from being cooped up for hours in my car. He went on to his interviews and I ordered some food and crashed in the hotel room.
The rest of the weekend was okay. Roads were a mess, but we saw from friends, went to dinner, and spent some much needed quality time together.
I think I’d be okay if he chooses UofR. It’s a big contender in his list of schools, so it’s a very big possibility at this point. We should know fairly soon what the other schools choose and then he can make a choice. I’m getting a bit nervous about it all.
I can’t believe I graduate in 2 1/2 months. I have no idea where the time went. This fall seems so far away. I never thought we’d make it this far, and here we are planning for our Big Move this summer. He’s in the final stages of grad school acceptance, I’m waiting to hear so I can start looking for jobs and apartments. Things are really starting to move along! I’m so freaked by not knowing where we’re going to be living in a few months, though. It’s maddening!
Anyway, I’m off. In order to actually graduate that would require me to pass my classes. Which requires studying…later!
RYN: Hell would have to freeze over first. It’d still be a miracle after that. Lol.
