tic-toc tic-tac *e* carma’s karma

See what giving up gum gets you? Now I’m addicted to tic tacs. More than anything though, I love the sound they make in their little plastic case when half of them are gone. “Tic-tac” they say to me…
“tic-toc” the clock says. Time is running out.

“You’re running out of time” says my advisor… “are you sure economics is right for you?” Smile and nod. Grin and bear it. Ignore what they say, they don’t think you can make it. “How’s your calculus?” he says. I have to tell him. He could find out anyway. He has my file “I failed Calc II,” I say. I continue to smile. He doesn’t smile. “Have you given any thought to any other majors?”

Long answer is yes yes yes, I’ve looked at them all, thought of them all. From the time I was 7 until now I never stopped changing my mind. But now I know what I want, this is what I want. For the first time ever I can see my future clearly in front of me. This is it. This is IT.

Short answer. “No,” I say. He looks worried. We discuss my plans for this summer(Calc I… to refresh myself), next semester (get your distributions out of the way). I tell him about this semester.. Stats, and Microecon… I’m doing well… He smiles again. Good, I think, I’ll show him… I’ll show them all.

Hit me with your best shot baby.

I still don’t seem to understand the concept of applying (for jobs) to multiple places. I went out ‘job-hunting’ today… but after the first place looked promising, I passed by the other places I had planned to apply to with (barely) a second glance. My first job–only applied to one place, had a job within a week. College. Applied early decison, got in, didn’t need to apply anywhere else. Now this. I walk in. They’re friendly. “Do you wanna just sit here and fill it out?” Sure. I smile. I finish, hand it back to the woman behind the counter. She’s the owner. “I’ll probably call you Monday,” she says. “Will you be here this summer?” Yup. “Excellent.” She smiles again.

I walk down St. Pauls. “Hiring,” I see, in the window of one of the other places I was looking. I hesitate. I almost walk in, but… I continue to walk by. “I’ll apply if I don’t get this other job,” I think. On my way into the building, signs say “Off-campus Housing Department has 2 positions available.” A phone number. Rip-off tabs at the bottom. I had ripped one the other day. I had intended to call today, perhaps from a park bench between stopping and filling out applications. But I didn’t.

Tic-tac. One left
Tic-toc. Time’s up.

*edit*:
When you’re right, you’re right, and I know you’re right.

I went back out… one place I had looked at was closed by the time I got there. Shame on me, I know. I’ll go back tomorrow. Another place. Another sign. An application filled out. Walking, walking, walking. CVS… I had to get some stuff anyway. Buy said stuff… ask the lady if they’re accepting applications (places like that usually accept applications even if they’re not hiring). She says no. Outward and onward… Another block… pretty far from campus by this point. Safeway (grocery store). In. Ask. She says “I don’t know if we’re hiring. Call or stop back tomorrow.” Again, it struck me as odd that she wouldn’t at least give me an application. I walked out of the Safeway, and right in front of me was one of the shuttle vans. I weighed my options of walking the 10 or so blocks back to campus versus a free ride, and hopped in the van. There were others in the van to be dropped off first, but as soon as they were all gone, the driver turned to me and asked, “So your application went okay then?”
“Yea,” I laughed as I realized that the guy driving the van was the same one that had been behind the counter of the first place I applied. Karma? Perhaps… the place is called Carma’s Café. He told me he’s only been there a week, and they hired him the day after his interview. It’s looking quite good, I must say. I can’t wait to be working again!!
