missed opportunity?

A couple of months ago, I was contacted by a friend/ex-boyfriend that I’d known in middle school. He moved away right after middle school, so it’s been almost six years since the last time I’d seen or talked to him. He found me through classmates.com, and we’d started emailing each other back and forth a little bit. Anyway, the last correspondence I got from him was right around Thanksgiving. For some reason that I’m still not sure of, I didn’t email him back until yesterday.

Today I was browsing Myspace, and decided to look him up, to see if he was on there. I found his profile and began reading some of it. His most recent blog entry title caught my eye, as it was in big bold capital letters “I’M GOING TO THE DESERT!!” I had known from our emails that he joined the Marines straight out of high school, so the fact that he was going overseas didn’t surprise me. What did surprise, and shock me, was that he left three days ago. If I hadn’t put off emailing him back, I would have been able to give him my address, and we could have kept up some kind of correspondence still. The fact that I missed him by only two days… it just blows my mind… I’m still sort of reeling from that.

And I can’t help but think… what if that was it? What if I never see or hear from him again? Getting back in touch with a long-lost friend is an amazing feeling.. the first email I got from him back in October left me feeling giddy and excited. I think I was even more excited about the prospect of re-meeting an old friend than I ever have been about meeting someone new. And now I think I might have blown it. I mean, I know he has to come back eventually(he’s only supposed to be over there for 8 months)… and if I’m really lucky, he’ll have some way to access his email between now and when he actually gets shipped out (sometime in February)… But then again… its been six years already… what’s another 8 months, right? heh.. if only I actually believed that.

And why the heck do I keep getting involved with military people?? eesh..

You can still email him and give him your addy and all that. I’m sure he’ll enjoy having someone to write to…help him take his mind off of things. ~K~
