I have a major problem with this

At the center of much recent media heat lies an ongoing battle regarding the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation, and many employers: The issue? Teachers have been dispersing union information not only on school grounds, but also during parent/teacher interviews. This issue has been so heated, even, that lawsuits have been levied in response to threats of disciplinary actions to those teachers who communicate on school grounds with parents and the general public regarding political issues such as class sizes and school closures. As a result, it was determined on May 7, 2004 (and subsequently appealed the week of April 18, 2005–I have yet to come across news of the appeal decision), that:

School boards are covered by the Charter of Rights and freedoms, and employers’ attempts to restrict teachers’ distribution of information on school premises violated teachers’ freedom of expression under the Charter. Teachers do not owe duty of fidelity to the government but only to the board that employs them.

By this ruling, teachers have been granted the full ability to bring their union’s agenda into the classroom, and subsequently turn our children’s’ classrooms into a political battleground.

Does anyone else have a problem with this? Isn’t it bad enough that our education system is severely lacking due to cutbacks and over-focus on technological advances? We have a public school system that, as it stands now, turns several "graduates" into the world without so much as a base knowledge of grammar, spelling, and math (I have seen cases where grade 10, 11, and even 12 students are unable to recite their basic multiplication tables). Now, the teachers who are supposed to be, in the words of my former high school’s mission statement, "Providing Opportunities to Excel" are going to further strip the students of such opportunities by turning parent-teacher interviews into campaign speeches, and school bulletin boards into post-sites for political propaganda.

The members of the BCTF may very well be entitled to Freedom of Speech under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but all Canadians are also guaranteed by this same Charter the right to obtain a base education, and subsequently, as stated in section 26:

The guarantee in this Charter of certain rights and freedoms shall not be construed as denying the existence of any other rights or freedoms that exist in Canada.

It seems to me that, rather disgustingly, the BCTF wants to protect their rights, but completely disregard the rights of the students whose educational rights they impose upon.

There’s two places you should never put politics in a school or a mental hospital because in the end someone gets hurt. Dont they have a privacy policy within the school that states descussing a student or parents personal matters without permisson may result in suspension.I dunno.thats how it is in my school. I hope everything straightens out.I mean schools now a day dictates rules
