Hospital Update
We are still at the hospital. Things seem to be moving in the right direction but it is slow and we are still without an answer or reason for what is going on. Lily has been far more animated today which is definitely good. She spent more time out of bed and lot of giggling. I even had to make sure I walked fast enough to keep up with her while we took some walks around the floor.
There is a wagon in the play room so we have made countless loops around the floor while she took rides. It was far easier today with hubby since one of us could pull the wagon and the other pushed the IV pole. It was quite the maneuvering task to have to do both yesterday. She also has a new favorite game – Whac-A-Mole. We’ve played a good portion of the day.
As neurotic as I am, I spent the hour in the play room yesterday cleaning and organizing while Lily played. They don’t have much but I have organizational issues. I was sorting the book shelves and they had two bins with a bunch of random baby toys. I am pretty sure all of them were broken somehow or missing pieces. At the bottom of both was a mess of at least a dozen puzzles and a couple of card games so I dumped out the bins and separated what I could. I gave a couple puzzles to Lily to do and I stuffed the pieces of all the older kid puzzles into a bucket. I told hubby today that if I had a box of ziploc bags I could see separating the rest but I’m sure that would be a futile practice. The only thing it would do is occupy me for a little bit.
I stepped out for almost two hours around lunch today. I wanted to pick up a couple things at the store for Lily and some lunch for hubby and me. I found a couple of games and bought some of her favorite treat foods in hopes of bribing her with them for eating other food. Plus, at this point, I’m ready for her to just get any calories in her. I also needed some bathroom stuff so I could freshen up. At least all the rooms have a shower.
We’ve watched countless movies but at least Lily is not utterly bored. They actually have a Wii set up too which would be the perfect item if John was in Lily’s situation.
We slept much better last night. Lily only moaned/talked in her sleep once or twice and we were only woken up once around 5 AM because her temp spiked again and needed medicine. We both fell back to sleep and didn’t wake until close to 8:20. Not bad. I’m hoping for another good night and more improvement in the morning.
Back to Lily. She is still spiking high temperatures. It was going up to 104+ all day yesterday. And most of the time, the fever came back before the Motrin wore off so we had to alternate between that and Tylenol. Lily hated the tylenol so much that they switched her to the infant drops just so it was less traumatic. The other issue is that once the fever would come back, she would get listless and unresponsive. She wouldn’t want to talk and forget making eye contact. But other than that, there really isn’t many other symptoms. The main one is her lack of appetite so getting her to eat or drink is impossible. I’m sure she is nauseous but the only time she threw up anything was Tuesday night. She just has had one or two dry heave moments each day since. Her IV also stunted her appetite so they finally lowered the rate yesterday which helped a little bit but she is still fine with not eating.
The pediatrician mentioned one possible concern of Kawasaki syndrome due to some of her symptoms – high temp, cracked, dark lips, flushed cheeks, inflammation etc. It wouldn’t be confirmed until the fifth day of fever and another tell tale sign would have been "strawberry" tongue and a distinctive rash. Thankfully her inflammation results in her bloodwork went down and the other symptoms never showed up or went away. I am feeling quite grateful since it didn’t sound like much fun. It’s the inflammation of the blood vessels. They actually don’t know what causes it or anything and can cause heart issues. If she would have had it she would have had to make several follow up appointments to check her heart to ensure it wasn’t effected.
Late yesterday, the new doctor detected some fluid in her right ear. It was a horribly bad ear infection but we opted to try out some antibiotics in hopes it would do something. I think it has helped a bit since her fever hasn’t been spiking as high ever since. It was 103 at 5 AM this morning and then 102 this evening. So here’s hoping it will continue to go down. She got her second dose of antibiotics this evening so maybe that will be enough to get whatever is going on.
My current theory is that she actually has a true bacterial sinus infection that really needs antibiotics. Most sinus infections are viral and clear up on their own but the way they hand out the meds, most people think otherwise. Ever since the first dose of antibiotics, Lily has been draining snot out of her nose like crazy. I didn’t even realize she was that congested. And it would also explain the lack of appetite because she is so super sensitive. Any type of post nasal drip makes her gag and throw up. And this would certainly be enough to kill her desire to eat too.
And then totally unrelated, that ultrasound she had to get? It showed up fine without any issues or concern but the tech could not find a left ovary. o.O I’m not all that concerned since with her age, they are pretty small and hard to detect plus she had to pee halfway through the exam which made detecting everything even harder. Either way, they suggested following up on it later.
Other than that, everything is status quo. John has been hanging out with my mom since Friday. I’m really hoping we have a chance of going home tomorrow. We may need to figure something out for John if that ends up not being the case. I’m not sure how much more my mom can do plus I’m sure John is missing us. I’m currently thinking I may have mom bring him home tomorrow or hubby can swing by and get him. Then I have a couple of friends who may be able to watch him a couple of hours on Monday. He could probably handle 3-4 hours here at the hospital with us if the watch a movie, he has his DS, and the Wii isn’t being used by a patient. This way hubby can still get in to work.
Me, I surprisingly doing fine. I’m not freaking out or extremely worried. My intuition must know it isn’t anything horrible and keep telling myself that I should keep listening to it. If anything, I’m getting antsy and bored of being stuck in one room for three days. Plus, being home and sleeping in my own bed will be nice too. I can’t complain though. I slept pretty well last night and I hope for the same tonight. And I will be praying that there will be a break in this fever tonight or early tomorrow. I want life to go back to normal.
Poor Lily! I totally would have organized the toys, too. Part of that is just liking toys to be organized! The other part is what is going on with Lily is fairly out of your control but the toys you could do something about. I would be the EXACT same way.

Sounds like whatever it is is slowly making its way out of Lily’s system now. Everything crossed that today everything is on the up and up and you get to go home tomm. *HUGS*
