Ski trip part 1

So, from Feb 27-March 7 I was in Colorado. I went there with Matt’s family for their traditional annual ski trip. It would have been much better than anticipated, had not one incident occured, but we’ll get to that as its near the very end of the vacation.

Here is a slightly abbreviated version of my spring break:

Thursday, February 26
sleep only 4 hours that night due to helping my roommate with her homework and being kept awake by her incessant typing on the computer. After an hour nap, I haphazardly throw anything I could possible need (including a hair iron, an electric massage, two bottles of pills, a room-temp ice pack, and a special pillow for my neck) into my bag. It barely fit. And then I remember I hadn’t packed my bathrobe, which was a good source of warmth… so I stuffed that in. After classes, Matt and I left. Since all of his stuff was at his house, he packed that night. Then we watched tv and went to bed much, much too late.

Friday, February 27
5:30am. I have been sleeping for nearly three hours… and now I’m up and getting ready to leave for the airport. Bleh. So we get to the airport, give all of our bags to curbside check-in except for our very heavy carryons – Matt’s and mine both had laptops with all the necessary accessories, plus all the books required/needed for study over the break. After staying awake long enough to find the gate and get on the plane, we all fall asleep soon after takeoff. I wake up to realize my neck has been in a rather kinked position for most of the three hour flight – and now it is in the most awful pain… great. Good thing I brought that electric massager. So after arriving, we meet Matt’s mom (who had flown in several days earlier). She was driving our 15-passenger van… Huge thing… luckily, she had the foresight to tell them to take out the back seat so we could fit our massive bags in the car. Then, we went to lunch.. then to Sam’s to buy food for the week. Then, we drove an hour and a half to some friend’s house to spend the night… after having dinner, Matt massaged my shoulders/neck and Joanne (Matt’s mom) gave me half a really powerful muscle relaxant… wow, that stuff really knocked me out. I slept/was groggy for 16 hours before I could be coherent again. And my neck only felt “ok,” not completely better. Then its back to the airport to pick up Adam, Matt’s roommate, and two family-friends who are so cute together (in their 50’s, they’re like newlyweds, still!). Finally, with not an inch left in the van, we begin our two and a half hour drive to Copper Mountain. When we arrive, one of the couples staying with us are already there… By that evening, we had 5 married couples, 4 guys in their twenties, plus Matt, plus myself all staying in this one large house. No, I did not have my own bedroom, much less my own bathroom. Instead, I had a hallway which barely fit a twin mattress. Oh, but I did get my own half-bath… I showered in Matt’s parents bathroom… They had two showerheads and it was lovely! I never stood in a cold spot!

Sunday, February 29
Today was our first day skiing. I got upset at first cause my shoulders were aching incredibly… and pulling/pushing yourself on flat ground isn’t fun… but eventually we made our way from our house to the ski lift – about 400 yards, I’m assuming… It took a little bit to get readjusted to the feeling, but once we began, it was smooth sailing and lots of fun. Matt is sexy on skis, thats the only way I can describe him. Sexy. That evening, we played “Axis and Allies,” an incredibly fun and strategic WW2 board game. I played Britain and wow did I dominate the seas! I played a fantastic first game, if I do say so myself.

Monday, March 1
Matt and I decided to take the day off… My shoulders were sore and we wanted to just have a fun day together. So, we played Axis and Allies together, just the two of us, and our special Diablo II game together… we had a blast. People ragged on us for taking a day off so early, but we just enjoyed ourselves. The entire day, neither of us went outside… we watched History channel and stayed in our PJ’s all day… it was so much fun.

Tuesday, March 2
Today was just a day of normal skiing. I started trying to improve myself in my turning… Matt and his dad gave me some pointers… Man, Matt is sexy on skiis…. That evening included another round of Ax&Allies with all four teams…. Germany gave up, again… this time after I again killed his fleet and he realized that I was about to have D-Day and he’d never fight me and the Russians off… so he gave up. (evil grin) I am gooooood…!

Wednesday, March 3
Today, Matt and I woke up with all intentions of skiing… but we ended up just taking the entire day off again. We didn’t play Ax&Allies, but Diablo II for a while… and more History channel… we did do some independant reading… but we didn’t care that everyone ragged on us for it. That night, Matt and I spent some alone time with Mikey, Matt’s older brother. I had just gotten off the phone with my sister and we were talking about her (and how she wants to go skydiving and Mikey’ll probly go with her) and just life in general… After about two hours of talking, we all went to bed around 11, for once not later than everyone else… the two other guys who were mid-20ies still had to go to bed, and they were sleeping in the same room as Matt and Mikey (and my hallway opened into their room). Well, I heard them come in probly an hour later… and this is exactly what I heard, “What the hell? Great y’all… who flooded the bathroom?!” I burst out into laughter – it sounded so funny! But, it was actually pretty serious… somehow, the toilet, after being flushed, had just never stopped refilling… so it overflowed and flooded not only the bathroom, but pretty much the entire room and even a part of my hallway. We only discovered the extent of the damage in the morning: all the water had drained through the ceiling into the light fixture in the garage, virtually ruining huge sections of the ceiling and freezing the cars in a sheet of contoured ice on the two cars in the garage. Oops. (grins) So, the guys had to rent a “Rug Doctor” for the supermarket and clean all the floors the next morning, before any of them could go skiing… Matt cleaned my hallway and put all the toilet-water sheets/clothes downstairs in exchange for me washing them and ensuring they were dried and given back to him… At least I didn’t have to touch them while they were dirty!

Ok, well, that’s all the energy I have for tonight…. No, that wasn’t the bad event that happened… that happened Friday night, late.
