Chemo round 1

Chemo Round 1.

I checked in at 8:30 and checked out at 2:30 making Round 1 a 6 hour ordeal.  Tom took the day off to accompany me and together during the treatment, we were somewhat productive.  Tom read, researched all sorts of things via the free wifi, and actually managed a nap or two.  I stayed connected with friends with text messages and sent my son a message from the chair.

Just before heading into school, Chase gave me a very serious wish for good luck as he reminded me to take the marble ravi, given to me the day before to encourage luck and inner strength.  So I sent this photo to Chase, during his school day, by way of his 3rd grade teacher who has now become my favorite cancer supporter.  I wanted to report to him that all was well.

This is the photo I received back with Chase reporting that all was well on his end too!  I cried.

I was told, by another cancer supporter and survivor, that if I do something during chemo such as knitting, beading, sorting, filing…etc. that it lessons the effect of chemobrain.  So I beaded and completed a beautiful wire wrapped copper and jade necklace.  I copied a design that Alden made for me during summer camp.  It took a little over 2 hours to complete and I have now decided to create one piece during each chemo session.  I will wear my finished piece the day after treatment as my triumph jewels.  I wore the copper and jade necklace on Friday to start the tradition.

Luckily, I didn’t have any immediate reactions to the treatment.  And after the treatment was complete, I asked Tom to take me shopping.  I chose steps rather than elevators. Becasue I could.  We went to Creative Health, a chinese restaurant and Costco. I was considering a quick trip to Trader Joes but decided I should probably go home and rest.  And overall, the side effects haven’t been horrible, but a little like my first trimester of pregnancy with nausea control.

One down, 5 to go.

So glad to hear that Round 1 went well. I have heard the same thing about getting a busy-hobby to counteract chemo-brain. My mom had mentioned it. I don’t recall what she did during the treatments, though. I think she just visited with the other women in the chemo room. She actually managed to re-connect with a childhood friend (wonder of wonders) and calls it an overall positive experience.
