It’s All About the Connection.

If you know me very well at all, you know that I have never really been a fan of American Idol. Why? Because I went to a school full of ’em. I was never one, but the people I went to classes with were. “Talent,” as displayed on A.I., was never really something that fazed me. I could hear the same thing, or better, in my Thursday afternoon recital class. That said, I’m totally watching this season!!! WHY?!?!

Because I know, (sort of) personally, PHIL STACEY and SABRINA SLOAN.

The former, I know from that college where everyone was an American Idol. We had Theory classes together and I even tutored him in class a couple times. Phil’s a great guy – would totally lie to your face to tell a funny story and if you called him on it, he’d just say, “Yep….” and keep right on going without missing a beat. Really funny guy. REALLY talented guy. If you watched last night, he was the last guy to sing and he was a bit shaky to start with, but once he got into performance mode and let his nerves settle a bit, he tore up Edwin’s song. Oh, and if that’s not enough to remind you – he’s the bald guy with the big blue eyes.

The latter – Sabrina – goes to my church, Mosaic. I’ve never really spoken to her personally, but Matt says he played keys for her a few weeks ago for praise and worship at the Pasadena service. Beyond that bit, I can’t really say that I know her as well as Phil, but I do know that she can sing, so keep an eye out for her tonight!

What are the odds that I would know not one, but TWO people in the competition this season? Freaky and weird, but yay!! I have to say, though, that because I actually had an acquaintance and semi-friendship with Phil, I’ll really be voting for him. The guy really deserves it. Unlike a lot of people that go on there, he is a true musician. He’s studied it, he’s produced albums for other people, he knows the music biz. He has the talent to get on the show and the musicianship to keep going.
