Science!

Today was filled with more training, of course. We went over the application process people have to go through to get free trees, and how to organize neighborhood tree plantings. We also listened to a few guest speakers, and from 12-4 we hiked at a park and saw some of the trees that grow around SJ. We also climbed up this one mountain, and near the top we got a pretty good view of the entire city (too bad it was smoggy… gross). It was nice to get outside though, because pretty much all week we have been sitting and listening to lectures, taking notes and dozing off. The information is interesting enough, it’s just hard to listen when it’s all crammed together and we don’t get to move around much.

We have 6 main trees we are supposed to be able to identify, and 36 others that we might see around the city. That’s fine and whatever, but I think it’s pretty hard to tell trees apart just by looking at them. I’m not sure exactly how else you’d do it, but a lot of trees look the same to me. Oh, and we have to know the trees by their scientific names. The only one I know so far is the Platanus acerifolia. Yikes, I have a long way to go. We discussed some chemistry a little yesterday when talking about soil composition and I completely zoned out… anything having to do with math or science really doesn’t fly with me, and my brain (as a defensive measure against learning) zones out at the first mention of it.

I realized today that I’m pretty addicted to the internet. When we came back from "work" the wireless connection wasn’t working, and I really didn’t know what the hell to do… the internet is my link to everyone I know! Melodramatic yes, but possible basically true. We had dinner (enchiladas.. they were okay but had too many onions, and now I have indigestion), and when we were done with the dishes the internet was working again! LIKE MAGIC. Yeah, so obviously that’s where I am now..the internet..

The boyfriend is really stressed out with his job again, and I think he’s pretty close to quitting. He just needs that one thing to push him over the edge, you know?  He just can’t take the fact that he’s expected to "fix" the accounts, but his boss is an older man that’s stuck in his ways and basically refuses to make financially responsible decisions…. like writing checks without telling Paul, and never letting Paul know what the money was used for, or what bills he has paid. I just want Paul to get out of there before his soul is completely sucked dry.

Umm…. geez, I don’t have anything else to say. Dang.

I don’t know why I get the urge to write in here now, everything I say is always the same. Oh, I get to see Paul this weekend! I already mentioned that yesterday.. ehh.. well it will be nice!

Quote of the day:

My brother, talking about why he’d never join the Army: "It’s the little things that count, and they suck at those little things". (This is another way of saying "They won’t let me eat junk food")

Sounds like Environmental Science, we had to identify about eight different types of trees (to be honest I STILL can’t be 100% sure on some of them if we’re just going based on the leaf) and several types of prairie grasses — NOT easy. I’m with you on the math part of “defense against learning,” although certain aspects of science I’m okay with. Soil composition is dicey. We just had to rememberwhich types were found in which ecosystems and be able to read a composition chart to tell you if a sandy loam was made of x percent clay x percent sand et cetera. Ick on onions and ick on Paul’s job, but YAY on him coming to see you!!! 😀

I love the quote … so true so true.

He doesnt know just how true his quote is, but he would only be deprived of junk food until after basic, then they honestly dont care.
