Not as over-hyped as people think

Ok, no one who was actually paying attention to a legitimate news source was expecting Manhattan or Long Island to sink into the sea. Mayor Bloomberg stated he was worried about flooding, he only evacuated the low-lying areas, and there was enough flooding in the city to justify the evacuation. You have to remember, if there were people in the flooded areas the potential for injuries, and therefore 911 calls and rescuers being put in harm’s way, would have gone up dramatically.

Also, if the central pressure recorded was not a record for a Category 1 storm, it had to be close. The central pressure for most of the track up the East coast was much more typical of a Category 3 storm, so if the water had been any warmer I’m sure it would have stayed stronger longer or even intensified.

I think it might have been a little over-hyped, but I think there was enough damage that people will still leave when told the next time. My real concern is that politicians will fail to act soon enough next time because their PR people will be urging them not to "over react like last time." If the media would just report instead of sensationalize I think we’d do much better in these situations. Although if it had hit New York as hard as it hit North Carolina there’d have been huge issues.

I’m going to have to take the toaster oven back, the wiring in the house won’t support it. It’s really weird that it keeps popping breakers no matter where I plug it in. I suppose there may be a manufacturing defect in the oven itself but up until now I’ve never owned one so I can probably cope.

I’ve been watching The Weather Channel most of the past two days (I have friends in the storm’s path) and I keep being surprised when I go outside and it’s clear and a little breezy. I grew up in Florida and normally when it was like that on television they were shooting nearby…

At any rate, I’ve heard from most of my friends and other than the power being out and trees down in the yards they are doing well. One of them is in the Navy, and he’s well, but he wasn’t in one of the duty sections so I don’t know how his ship fared. I had originally heard that the fleet at Norfolk was putting out to sea, but his ship just got orders to double up her lines and ride it out at the pier.
