Almost another whole shift at the hospital

At least this time it wasn’t a Worker’s Comp thing. One of my hourly managers has been feeling "off" the past few days, and tonight he complained of being lightheaded and tingling in his hands. I told him if he had to leave to go to the hospital, then that was ok by me.

I ended up driving him down, and after four or five hours his wife shows up. I didn’t think it was going to be that serious so I was surprised. She told me he has Type II diabetes, just diagnosed in the past few hours, and his blood sugar was in the 500’s, so he was going to be here a while. She thanked me for bringing him, and said I could go on back to work now if I needed to.

I did some checking, and "normal" blood sugar levels are between 135 and 140, and anything above 180 is very bad. Jesus. He’s younger than me and has a lower BMI than I do. He’s got to be more active by virtue of the fact he has two kids under the age of six he watches every day when his wife is at work. Well crapola, I guess it’s time to get serious about the weight loss.

Tomorrow after work I’ll begin the walking on a regular basis, eventually adding in to my daily routine even on days I work. For now that may be a bit much. I’ll cut back on calories too, but that’s going to be a slowish process simply because I’m used to eating on a schedule now (the overnight shift is much more regimented than daytime). It’s not like I didn’t already know I needed to. As a matter of fact I think I had originally planned on trying to get about a hundred or so pounds off before this year’s AWA ever since last year’s AWA and I haven’t made any significant progress. Now I have a reason, even though my cholesterol and A1-C levels were textbook perfect four months ago.

So, ladies and gentlemen of OpenDiary, my name is ToyMan, and the renovation starts right now.

I am with you. So far I have dodged diabetes but I have high triglycerides which is very scary. I want to shape up and lose 50 lb.
