Pearl Harbor Day
Not a lot of mention of it on the non-history non-military channels today. Kinda sad, it was a pivotal moment in world history, and fewer and fewer people seem to care or remember each year.
My grandfather (mother’s father) was stationed there at a forward air defense post. Of course, being an Army post it wasn’t created until late March 1942, a bit late, but he said they had a really nice gun. His war career pretty well consisted of gun maintenance, test firing the gun, and hiding the jeep they had stolen from the Navy base. It was a long way to the PX, you see. Days were hot and beer was required in the evenings. I’ve got his bayonet, it still has a notch in it where he used it to open beer bottles even though you can tell he tried to fix it by sharpening the blade.
Had K today. Made myself a birthday cake since no one else manned up, which is a tad disappointing but I am forty, I can probably deal with it.
Going to the annual Christmas get together at my cousin’s this weekend. Not really thrilled about it, but they already know I’m off work and my mother needs me to drive since she can no longer see to drive at night, at least not in the middle of nowhere. I like my family and all, and I’m closer to my mom’s side than my dad’s, but we’ve kind of lost touch over the years, and the blame for that has been place squarely on me even though I’ve only had three phone numbers in the past twelve years and they could easily have called or come to visit me, but they didn’t.
That’s all for now. Off to watch Glee and Eureka and then to bed. I have to go in tomorrow and I’ve just gotten a text letting me know that some Divisional wonks are in the area and we don’t know if they are headed North or South, so we don’t know if we’ll see them or not. Yay.
