Hole in my back…
Guess who has melanoma? Me. GULP.
When Matt and I saw Abby in Dallas a month or so ago, she told me about how Nick (her bf) had a melanoma spot on his leg that he had to get cut out. That prompted me to book a doctor’s appointment asap. There was a spot on my back that didn’t look quite right. It was not raised, wasn’t red, was not irregular in shape in any way, but it was a deep brown color. I went in last week to get it looked at. She sliced it off and before I knew it, called me to come in to see her for the results. I knew that that was not good at all, that I had SOMETHING. Mom came with me. She was so nervous about the whole thing. She said she didn’t sleep at all the night before. I think that with my dad’s cancer and now a skin problem on my end, that she was a little freaked out.
Doc came in and said that the spot was melanoma. Said I was very lucky. Lab tests showed my body was fighting it, that it was not spreading below the surface of the skin, and that it was melanoma on a very low-end of the scale. She referred me to another doc, and I went and saw him today. I’m getting it cut out of my back Friday. Mom will pick me up and drive me to the clinic since I will be put under. Doc will give me enough vicodin to last for awhile, then will cut out the stitches in 10 days. I will do a chest X-ray tomorrow, and I had my blood taken today. On top of that, I have a disgusting lump of fatty tissue on my back as well. Matt calls it my horn. Gross, I know. Apparently, this runs in the family. I can touch it and move it around and while it doesn’t hurt, it really grosses me out. I’m getting the fatty lump removed on Friday too. Yay.
I knew I had some serious skin damage. Sunscreen will be put on every day. It’s not like I laid out in the sun or anything, but years and years of sun damage made my skin crazily freckly. Before I knew the results, I wasn’t thrilled anyway with the sun. It made me worry. I’m glad I got everything checked out asap. I’m required to visit the doc every 3 months to check for damage.
On a random note, I joined facebook this afternoon. I was bored before my doc appointment and decided to kill some time. Found a lot of HS people with babies. Everyone’s preggers. Except me 🙂
Alright, I’d better make some dinner 🙂 Peace out!
Not great news, but that’s great that you were able to catch it early! I hope the procedure goes well and you aren’t in too much pain.

okay, this is funny that you wrote this, because in the entry before the one you noted today, i mentioned that i booked a dermo appointment to get everything checked out. i read an article recently that freaked me out, and i want to get my whole body checked. you seem pretty relaxed about this, so that’s good. it’s scary what can happen, and i definitely need to be more careful too. i don’t have any moles that look particularly scary, but i’m still super paranoid.

Glad you caught the melonoma before it got serious. I wonder if I’m blase about skin cancer issues because of my skin colour – I suppose it’s not as high a risk but it’s still a risk. I’m still not on facebook. I’ll never be on it! 😉
