2005 Oscar Nominees

It’s that exciting time again! In a month, the winners of the 77th Academy Awards will be announced and administered. They just announced the 2004 movie nominees, and The Aviator received received the most nominations, 11 though I don’t think it deserves that many. Once again, many movies do not deserve nominations or awards.

Instead, most movies today deserve fines and punishments for nasty and improper content, being negative influences to society, and confusing viewers. The purposes of movies are to clearly tell a story through motion pictures, speech, and music, and educate the audience with good lessons and knowledge. Unfortunately, these purposes seem to be lost more and more with time. Many modern movies stray from the point of the story to show off producers’ creativity and special effects, and for detailed scenes of love, violence, drugs, backstage behavior, and other forms of crime and improper content. Giving them nominations and awards will only encourage production of these type of movies, which will continue to corrupt the already corrupt society.

I wish Fahrenheit 9/11 had been nominated for Best Documentary, and even better, win in that category. It shows the weaknesses of President Bush with some humor. Maybe that right-wing religious fanatic had interferred so that the anti-campaign about him would not be included, or most Oscar people are Republicans.

I hope Disney movies and other movies "for kids" receive some awards. Those usually teach good lessons without nasty or improper content. Many adults need those lessons as well. Over the years, the Academy Awards people have become biased, with too much politics. They seem to prefer only certain genres. It they are going to be so unfair, then they should not nominate movies that don’t belong to their preferred categories.

Oscar time also provides me with much stress. Besides school, I would now have the stress on catching up on movies, especially the Best Motion Picture nominees. This means spending time and too much money in theaters to see movies, including ones I originally had no intention of seeing.  It is also torture for me to sit still in a dark room with too much air conditioning, loud noise, and screen for at least two hours. If I wait for the VHS or DVDs to appear in video stores, the popularity of the movies would be too outdated. Then I also have the stress of having to watch the Oscars, sometimes against my will since everyone watches them.

Another source of stress is the fear of something bad happening after I enjoy the Oscars, the bad aftertaste and ending. I faced that last year when I checked my e-mail after watching the event on TV, and found a rude and discouraging message from my professor. Well, I don’t think I have a reason to be receiving e-mails from professors this year.
